Pardon me if the answers to these questions are easy to find, lol, BUT:

+ Does anyone know when assignments would go out approximately? Because whatever I write will need writing before the 18th due to me not being home between then and Christmas, and if signups were going out Dec 1 or something, that might make things slightly complicated.

+ Relatedly, is it really possible to browse peoples' letters and just write whatever if you haven't done a regular signup - am I understanding that right?

eta: Thanks, Cel and Emei! ♥

Hodgepodge of a post!

+ [personal profile] camelotremix has gone live this morning! MY GIFT IS AWESOME: First Up Against the Wall (the grease and diesel oil remix), it's Gwen/Morgana, modern AU, a remix of this little smutlet I wrote at a Fleet party called Grease-Stained? I'm kind of flailing that someone's made something so wonderful from it. The author's basically turned it into a scene from a longer fic; it has mechanic!Gwen, cute hot Gwen/Morgana-ness, mechanic!Gwen, a great supporting cast, mechanic!Gwen, touches on class issues, and also mechanic!Gwen. IT IS THE GREATEST.

I wrote one too obviously! But I can't say which one until sometime next week, I believe. (I imagine mine is super-easy to guess, for better or worse, but OH WELL. *g*) Hopefully my recipient is as happy with her gift as I am with mine. I have some vagueish ideas who might have written mine, but I'm not sure. Anyway, check it out; there are 31 fics, four of them Gwen/Morgana even!

+ There was some TV I was going to talk about! I'll be brief, and I'll go in order of my reactions, from 'BEST' to 'mixed' to 'what the actual fuck', shall I?

+ The Good Wife )

What're y'all nominating for Yuletide? Nominations are on, now through the 20th.

I'm thinking of stuff I read and loved this year, like Runaways, The Queen's Thief... I don't know if I should use my spaces on Hunger Games or Avatar TLA because surely they've already been nommed? Hmm.

I'm going to sign up. I've got no holiday exchanges on my plate and I've written four things since Saturday, so far. I FEEL THIS MEANS I MIGHT BE OKAY.
heathershaped: (Merlin: Arthur/Gwen)
+ GUYS I FEEL GOOD TODAY. I have today and tomorrow off work, which is awesome. Annnd I have been somewhat productive this weekend! I finished my [personal profile] camelotremix fic (a day late, lalala), and to celebrate, I went over to the Get Arthur and Gwen Laid Campaign at [livejournal.com profile] freemurmurs and wrote some truly filthy A/G porn. *claps in delight* Porn that I may never actually sign my name to, but still! You should all check out that meme if you feel as strongly as I do that Arthur and Gwen should get laid in as many ways as possible.

MY OVERALL POINT IS, I have written more in the last two days than I have in many months! Since the Gwen LAS, I believe. I'm hoping this means my muse is coming back to me and if it is, I might sign up for Yuletide since I have no other holiday exchanges this year (does anyone know when signups are?). I think that would be awesome.

I have much-neglected yardwork to do today and some other things to take care of, but I might write some more pr0ns today too, just to see if yesterday was a fluke or not. :D Apart from that, I have two beta jobs to finish. I'll send them along tonight, ladies. ♥

+ I haven't checked tumblr much at all this weekend which means it'll probably be overwhelming to catch up on at this point, but apparently there is some kind of campaign to woo people back to LJ by not posting on tumblr for a month? I know some of you know what I mean and have been posting about it, and I have some thoughts on it.

When it comes to my f-list, I feel like tumblr is not my problem so much as fandom drift. I've dipped into so many fandoms, mostly abandoned my original fandom, and made friends all over the place, and I don't want to lose any of you that I either talk to now, or have formed connections with through RP and whatever in the past. I still read your posts, and try to comment more, and care about all of you. ♥ You guys put up with my social justice ramblings, my random links, my Merlin posts. You commented when I lost my dog, when my mother was in the hospital last year... whether we still share fandoms or not. I love y'all, and I hope I've been as supportive a presence as you all have been. If you ever feel like we're drifting too far apart we can work on it. ♥

+ hat tip to [livejournal.com profile] sophinisba for linking to an interesting discussion on canon/fanon woobies. What are they? Are they always dudes, and why is that? It spawned some discussion in Sophie's own entry as well. :D

I'll be the first to admit that manpain (think single crystalline tears) doesn't fascinate me much apart from a few characters (hey there Merlin), but female woobies get me every time, if only because they're so rare. To me it comes down to male bias in most canons, and it's also a question of perception by showrunners and by fans: about when and for whom it's acceptable or even sexy to be vulnerable. The responses in the post are really interesting; there's a variety of ideas about qualifies as a woob and who the woobie characters are across fandoms.

+ [livejournal.com profile] reel_merlin signups! Through the 15th. I'm 1) already freaking out and 2) really excited for some of these! I went ahead and signed up for Y Tu Mamá También, which will end up Gwen/Morgana with some Gwen/Morgause and Morgana/Morgause. I'm struggling with a few things though; I might pester y'all about it at some point.

+ I'm watching Sarah Connor Chronicles. It's reeeeally good. I'm kind of upset it lost out to Dollhouse (which was then promptly canceled anyway).

+ I've been feeling a bit crap over the past week, just kind of fatigued and sniffly. I don't think it's flu but I'm about ready for cold season to be over. I'm SO glad it's March. Eff February, seriously.

First, a meme, spotted like four times on the f-list so far:

Let’s make a magical wave throughout LJ.
When you see this entry, post a picture of the show to your own journal.

her faaaace

+ Secondly, I have lots of feelings about recent TV. Quickly:

Vampire Diaries: PENCILS AND MAKEOUTS AND GIRLS OH MY lesbian friendship necklaaaaace
Big Love: OH MY GOD THIS SEASON SO FAR. [insert massive rant directed toward Bill Henrickson]
Being Human: OH MY GOD THIS SEASON SO FAR. [insert Annie love screed and George flail]
Skins: Okay I guess. I have Thoughts but idk if I feel like taking the time to post 'em.
LotS: Kahlan and Caraaaaa akdjfalflahdl

+ I will at the very least expand my thoughts on Big Love, BH and TVD when I get some time.

I also have a mess of BH icons to finish and post, one teenyfic to write, one Finishathon fic to finish, and one help_haiti fic to write, a [livejournal.com profile] halfamoon picspam, and a bunch of other sundries to get to.

+ Also, watched Whip It this weekend. BEST.

+ Might linkspam at you guys later.

Solstice!

In all my linkspamming yesterday I er, kinda forgot to post about it. *g* Reveals went up yesterday.

My fic was from [livejournal.com profile] such_heights, and it's OT4, and it's fabulous! It's called In a quiet water'd land. Gwen being awesome and makeouts; I should have known it was Amy. Go read, it rocks hard. ♥♥♥

I wrote Loud As Hope, a bit of messy Arthur/Gwen/Merlin-ness for [livejournal.com profile] kathkin. Im'a repost it in a bit, I guess.

Thanks to the mods!

Also, Finishathon over at [community profile] camelot_fleet! I'm tickled, my results were these:

True Blood crossover (Merlin + Merlotte's, idk it makes sense in my head)
5 (9.4%)

That One Modern AU Where The OT4 Work At a Pizza Hut
40 (75.5%)

Gwen/Morgana SPN fusion fic
17 (32.1%)

Apparently, waitstaff who smell vaguely like pizza dough all the time >>>>>> Gwen and Morgana as hunters (hunters, you guys, HUNTERS adfjalkfja). OKAY FINE. :D The pizza hut AU is the thingy I started for the Hometown AU challenge and I've been wanting to finish it. *g*

+ Has anyone tried the Write or Die desktop app? Worth the ten bucks? I like the regular version.

+ I want to share this vid, most recently picked up at [personal profile] deepad's journal.

Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie giving a talk about 'The Danger of a Single Story'

On reading, writing, and how the stories we're exposed to can shape our perspectives. It's eighteen minutes long, but more than worth a listen.

The problem with the single story is this: it robs people of dignity. It makes our recognition of our equal humanity difficult. It emphasizes how we are different, rather than how we are similar.

Word. I would quote the whole talk back at you if I could.
heathershaped: (Merlin: Gwen hollow)
+ I am home from work today. Know how on Friday I was wondering if I was coming down with something? I WAS. :D Starting to feel better now though; I think it's just a cold and not the flu or anything.

+ If any of you remember Geocities, check xkcd's page today. Serious lulz, and memories. Oh god, the stars and scroll text and comic sans. COMIC SANS. I remember when almost all the fanfic I used to read was at Geocities or Angelfire. Animorphs slash? What Animorphs slash?

+ Two things I am newly watching: Emma (which is now over) and Parks and Recreation. I like this adaptation of Emma better than any I've seen; it's gorgeous and delightful and actually pretty hilarious. I wasn't sure I'd like Jonny Lee Miller as Knightly, but I was wrongggg, he is wonderful in it. And Parks and Recreation is just endless lols. And my crush on Rashida Jones is epic. Reminds me to do that massive picspam of my favorite female characters.

+ Mad Men seriously made me teary last night. Did anyone else wibble like a complete fool? Because I did. Don and Betty, Don and Betty. GAH. ALSO GO JOAN. But also aww, Joan. I want so much more for you. And Peggy had one line the whole episode, but if you're only going to get one line, it should definitely be "I can't turn it off; it's actually happening!" <333

+ Congratulations to everyone doing NaNoWriMo next month! I'll be cheering you on whilst NOT DOING IT. But! I did join [livejournal.com profile] wrisomifu (short for Write Something You Miserable Fuck), which [livejournal.com profile] sophinisba and [livejournal.com profile] briar_pipe pointed me to yesterday. You basically commit to writing anything for ten minutes of every day in the month of November. Literally anything; in my case, fanfic. And usually, if I can strap down and focus for ten minutes on something, it stretches out much longer than that. If anyone else wants to join me there, just comment here for an invite.

+ Off work today -- feels good. I should probably do something productive like clean my place.

+ Instead I'm tinkering with fics and watching Wimbledon - great match happening between Andy Murray and Andy Roddick. (Side note: they are VERY pretty.) Murray's giving Roddick a good fight.

Ad, Deuce, Ad, Deuce. Oy. As Stephen Fry put it on his Twitter earlier: "Wimbledon. Oh, in the name of cock-mothering arse mustard. The tension."

+ I signed up for [livejournal.com profile] startrekbigbang. Possibly I shouldn't have. And yet.

+ Right now I'm working on a random piece of Gwen/Morgana smut as well as reel_merlin fic number one. And the femslash porn battle prompts are up for comment-ficcing, but I'm not looking at those at the moment because really. Like I need another distraction.
heathershaped: (Merlin: Angel C. glance down)
Random stuff:

+ I am kind of weirded out/impressed/geeking out about this 10-minute abridged version of the Google Wave demonstration on YouTube. It looks ... shiny. And a bit freaky at the same time. Being able to see what the other person is saying as they type it letter-by-letter. Being able to hold a group chat and hide some replies from some users within the same chat. That real-time automatic translator thing. Syncing with Twitter. (LOL @ 'Twave'.) A lot more cool, largely unnecessary, probably-hard-to-get-used-to but still COOL stuff. I should like to try it out. XD /nerd

+ I just left a load of prompts for [personal profile] oxoniensis's Porn Battle VIII. Go! leave some!

+ Speaking of prompts, I am FULL of fic ideas -- Trek, Merlin, and HP -- but nothing has made it to completion yet. *browses folder of started fics and frowns* Actually finishing one would be lovely. I am currently playing with Uhura/Gaila genfic and Kirk/McCoy kidfic, [livejournal.com profile] hermionebigbang Trio fic, and Gwen-centric [livejournal.com profile] boxofmagic fic of as-yet-unknown pairing. *headdesk* It's still gen at the moment; maybe it'll stay that way. I'm seriously not sure if I'll get that done in time, but I'll finish and post it either way. It'll be nice to finish something long for Merlin fandom.

+ I get distracted too easily. Maybe I should do one of those fandom to-do lists.
heathershaped: (Obama Michelle)
Fannish things that have made me smile today:

+ Limerick battles at the [livejournal.com profile] hermionebigbang author community *loves*
+ Reading the prompts at [livejournal.com profile] femgenficathon
+ Having a [livejournal.com profile] boxofmagic idea that is solid (finally OMG) -- and a Gwen muse that is loud enough in my head to write it :D
+ Pics from the Obamas' trip to Europe. We has The most Stylish First Couple Evar.

RL things that I feel reasonably okay about:

+ Trying to cut down house payment. Making progress on that front.
+ Possibly having enough money to upgrade to an iPhone, once my tax refund comes in
+ Annual review time at work -- meep. I never look forward to these, no matter what. But hopefully it will be fine.
+ The general Friday-ness of today
+ Having time to write this weekend

Hope everyone's having a good day -- hugs to anyone who needs them. ♥

So, I get one fic challenge off my plate (Ladies of Camelot challenge pwned! Woot!) and what do I do?

Well, sign up for another, of course. *headdesk*

I requested a prompt at [livejournal.com profile] femgenficathon. I didn't want to let that one pass me by this year. What with the characters I write in RP and everything, I usually write boys and I guess I assumed for a while that boys were the most comfortable for me to write (apart from Hermione, who I'm very comfortable with). But as I try more characters/pairings in HP as well as different fandoms, I find myself wanting to write the girls more. Which, yay, because I do love writing boys, but I love stories about women best of all.

They give four months to write a minimum of 1000 words, so I'm not overly worried about being able to get it done. But it's multifandom -- so I have to decide whether to write an HP fic or a Merlin fic for it. On the one hand, lots of girls to choose from for HP, but on the other, Gwen and/or Morgana gen, or Nimueh gen, needs to happen more. We'll see what talks, I guess. Or maybe I'll do a poll.

Anyway, go sign up! You pick a number from the list randomly, and the mod assigns you a quote as your prompt, from some notable woman in history. My prompt:

By the time we are women, fear is as familiar to us as air; it is our element. We live in it, we inhale it, we exhale it, and most of the time we do not even notice it. Instead of "I am afraid," we say, "I don't want to," or "I don't know how," or "I can't." -- Andrea Dworkin (1946-2005), American radical feminist and author.
heathershaped: (HP: head-wardrobe)
Note to self:

'Brainstorming' whilst lying in bed at 11pm? Not a good idea.

Next thing you know, it will be morning, and you will have got nothing done.

And you will, inexplicably, still be sleepy the next day.
heathershaped: (sytycd danny pasha)
+ I feel groggy and weird and grumpy. Could use a few more hours of sleep. I'd blame Daylight Savings, but that doesn't really account for the other few hours I could've been sleeping, does it? Thank god for Spring Break, at least -- no class tonight.

+ If when I get my Spring Fling fic finished today, I'm gifting myself with a new layout and header. I'm already completely sick of the yellow.

+ I might be overhauling my Big Bang ideas -- the Merlin one, at least. I'm having a bit of a crisis of confidence when it comes to plotting it out, particularly settling on one bunny and running with it. The HP one is fairly solid; it just needs to be fleshed out. I wish I were better at outlining.

(Speaking of the Hermione Big Bang, it's starting to feel kind-of overwhelming, the way it's been coming together. In a good way, but just ... wow.)

+ I am told that I should be watching Big Bang Theory. Apparently it's right up my alley, and the fact that I've never seen it is a gross oversight that I should rectify immediately. I'll get on that, and report the results. *g*

+ Dollhouse -- I watched the latest episode last night. I'm really getting into it and I'm glad I gave it another shot after the rather slow pilot (I thought). But it's so skeevy; I just want Echo and Sierra to get the hell out of there. And then hook up.

+ I think that's it. Hugs to everyone who needs them today. ♥
heathershaped: (P&P: Keira)
+ Big Bang signups are going WELL. They don't even close until the 27th, and if even half of the people who've signed up so far submit something, we'll have upwards of a million words of new Hermione fic. O_O And there is het of many pairings, femslash, crossovers, gen, everything. (Although, [livejournal.com profile] florahart supposes that we're going to need personal sanity consultants before it's done, when it comes to actually running this thing. Needless to say, as it's a Hermione fest, there is already a spreadsheet forming in order to keep it all straight. With tabs. And different colors.

+ We'd love more betas, cheerleaders, and artists as well as authors -- so by all means head over if you want.

Additionally, I promise to keep my rambles about all this to one post a week at most. ;)

+ I've been compiling more Merlin recs, and tossing around the idea of a rare pair recsletter, or something -- in the vein of Quibbler Report? I'm just not sure I'd have the time to maintain something like that. Just a thought. For now, I'll go ahead and post another recs list like normal, probably next week -- or just add to my first one.

+ Welcome to new friends! Feel free to add me on Twitter if you want. And hugs to everyone who needs them today. Special hugs go to [livejournal.com profile] superioritea, [livejournal.com profile] lesemma and [livejournal.com profile] cloverdew; I hope your weekends turn out wonderful. ♥
heathershaped: (Merlin: Mean Girls)
How about a proper, less-whiny post, hm? ;) I've got the day off, so not much to complain about overall.

+ [livejournal.com profile] hpvalensmut reveals are up, so go check out the fics! I did Hermione/Luna, which was my first go at femmeslash (obviously I liked it, 'cos I now have two rather epic femmeslash fics in the pipeline. XD) Also, [livejournal.com profile] hp_springsmut started posting yesterday, and it promises to be awesome.

+ Also in the potentially-epic category, I'm bouncy about the Hermione Big Bang (which we were able to put together quite quickly, considering -- clearly that's because Inell, Flora, and Mary kick ass), and I already know just what I want to write for it even if I've got [livejournal.com profile] thelittlebang and [livejournal.com profile] boxofmagic that are more immediately pressing in terms of deadlines.

+ Speaking of [livejournal.com profile] boxofmagic, I know a few of you on my flist are doing it too -- and I hope this goes without saying, but just in case it doesn't, I'm here if you guys need a sounding board or a cheerleader or a shoulder to whine on, or anything like that. A couple of you've been lovely enough to offer the same to me, which means a lot because I'm still getting my feet wet in this fandom. ♥ SO. ANYTHING YOU NEED, K? No matter what pairing. Feel free to email me at hnicole83 @ gmail dot com. ♥

+ Also, wish me luck because I have SO MUCH TO WRITE OVER THE NEXT FEW MONTHS. Between the three Bangs, the summer fests, and the fact that I have totally unrelated bunnies that I want to write as well. *bounces around* I kind of love it, though.

Okay, I'm off to work on my [livejournal.com profile] hp_spring_fling assignment and a Merlin ficlet. Hugs to anyone who need them today. ♥
heathershaped: (Firefly still flying)
-- Being Human's been picked up for a second series. And we get 8 episodes instead of just six. *dances* Even though it's doing really well in the ratings, I honestly didn't know if it'd be back. I think I'll make another set of icons to celebrate. XD

*is obviously a complete dork*

-- moar TV rambling: Top Chef ended last night so there's a new winner. I don't want to talk about it. -_-' However, Damages was fabulous. I wish more people were into that show. I'm completely behind on Nip/Tuck (probably because it fairly sucks and has since about season 3, and I can't be arsed to remember to watch anymore). But I do need to catch up on Big Love, which is still awesome. And The Tudors is back really soon, but I honestly don't know how good it'll be without Anne. Surely it'll still be pretty, though, and as always that's reason enough to watch.

-- I'm nervous and excited about [livejournal.com profile] thelittlebang and [livejournal.com profile] boxofmagic, and maybe one other that I may or may not be tossing around ideas for with a couple people, we'll see. I'm going to be writing my ass off this spring/summer. Which, overall, is good. *nod*

So in the spirit of that -- Buttons:

Hope everyone's having a good day. ♥

YOU GUYS.

I may have just signed up for [livejournal.com profile] thelittlebang.

...and [livejournal.com profile] boxofmagic.

Hold me.

But no, srsly, you should join me. XD The Little Bang is for femmeslash in whatever fandom you want (I'm doing HP, obviously; been tossing around a Hermione/Pansy idea).

And [livejournal.com profile] boxofmagic is the Merlin Big Bang, and I am nuts, but yeah. Mine will be either Gwen/Morgana or a gen-ish OT4 idea. I think.

Sign up for one or both so you can wibble with me. XD Eeee!

They're not exchanges, which removes some of the pressure. They've got to be loooong, though. Meep! Please to be indulging me as I flail, kind of a lot, over the next few months.
heathershaped: (Being Human: Annie)
* Today's been good. I have nothing planned except to watch the Oscars, so I wouldn't exactly call it exciting, but just ... it's nice not having anything pressure-ful to do. XD

* I caught up with the last ep of Being Human which was AMAZING; seriously, you should all be watching. Only one episode left. And I posted a set of icons from 1x04 that I made last night. It's kind of hard to color those caps, but I found a nice way I think.

* Oh, and my [livejournal.com profile] hp_springsmut fic is pwned (why yes, I did finish the fucking in the fic). Two more exchange fics left for this season. I was really tempted by [livejournal.com profile] weasleyfest, but I'd already bit off a bit too much with [livejournal.com profile] hp_spring_fling and [livejournal.com profile] hp_rarities. :( No more doing three and four exchanges at a time. Yeah. I love them, but I've recently realised how nice it is being able to write something just because I want to, rather than just filling a request, so I want to give myself more time to do that.

* Merlin fic! I'm sort of incredibly nervous to start writing in this fandom, but it's really difficult to watch the show and NOT want to write about it. The characters are just so writeable. (And this is apparently the post where I make up words). I did some teenyfics for the Vag Fest, which was fun -- I might do one or two more before it ends today. And I want to try some of the Gen Battle prompts. There are some good Merlin and Harry Potter ones, and that one ends next Friday. Also, I'm tempted to put my hat in for [livejournal.com profile] boxofmagic because Arthur/Merlin is nice, but there needs to be more Gwen and Morgana fic, and so few people have signed up to write it. *nods and nudges people* Still, it's a rather huge writing commitment, so I need to think on it more. XD

* I'm off to do some beta work, maybe try another teenyfic, and put together a Merlin squee/rec list out of my del.icio.us bookmarks because I finally have TIME.

♥ Hugs to everyone who need them today -- oh, and hay new friends!
