soooooo
What're y'all nominating for Yuletide? Nominations are on, now through the 20th.
I'm thinking of stuff I read and loved this year, like Runaways, The Queen's Thief... I don't know if I should use my spaces on Hunger Games or Avatar TLA because surely they've already been nommed? Hmm.
I'm going to sign up. I've got no holiday exchanges on my plate and I've written four things since Saturday, so far. I FEEL THIS MEANS I MIGHT BE OKAY.

Tanya Huff - Blood and Smoke series
Gail Carriger - Alexia Tarabotti series
Barry Hughart - Master Li series
Mike Shepherd - Kris Longknife series
...and one other that I don't remember.
...I really don't want to see Inception there. Or Merlin. Or Harry Potter. Or anything that I can skim through my dwirlist or network/fof list and find dozens of.
If it's going to become self-indulgent to the mods and the friends-of-mods, then...Yuletide is going to be a problem. Isn't the point of YT to cater for fandoms that don't have 5000 people including it in their interests lists and two dozen communities that are updated at least once a week?

I feel like Inception and Sherlock are going to slip in through the brand-new loophole IF the mods keep that loophole in the rules. Merlin and White Collar should be out of the running for sure. Even Merlin RPF.
Do you feel like it's becoming self-indulgent on the mods' parts? I saw the new eligibility addendum about making it a function of popularity on the AO3 specifically? But I'm still confused about that because seems like the AO3 still kinda skews toward the unpopular which might throw things off.

New fandoms are all very well, but when things like Merlin, Sherlock, Inception, and whatnot are wildly popular in their first year (mostly because slashfen move in flocks), I think it's unfair to the rarer fandoms.
Even if, as someone on my LJ pointed out, the fandoms are matched by rarest first, it still won't prevent someone from writing the most popular option on their card simply because it's easier, there's plenty of fans, and there's plenty of fanon.
