+ So work and life and school have been busy enough that it's easier for me to microblog lately, over on Tumblr and Twitter. You can pretty much always find/follow me over there. I keep trying to make posts here but never feel like I have anything interesting to say, and I feel worse as time passes, and and and. I also don't really feel like I have a fandom anymore, and that feels really weird on LJ especially. But as always I miss you when I stay away. :/

+ In the next month or so, things'll probably get even tighter for me because I need to pick up a part-time job in addition to my full-time one. I have no idea what it's going to be, but I need to bring some extra money in because it's hard to focus on anything when I'm feeling so snowed under. Basically I might look into waitressing or something? I used to be pretty good at that. Or retail, I don't know. It's really hard to imagine anyone hiring me for something on the weekends when they could take on any number of high school or college kids instead. I guess I won't know until I try. It's been...a really long time since I've looked for part time work, I don't even know what it would pay. I'd prefer to move into a full-time job that pays better, but it's not in the cards right now because I owe my company a couple more years for paying for grad school.

I'm hoping I'll actually feel better, even if I have less time to myself. Money stress (most types of stress I guess) tends to make me want to watch TV under the covers forever and not do anything, not even read LJ properly, and it gets really depressing and unhealthy and I don't wanna talk about it ok moving on.

+ LJ's not making it any easier to be back around with this new comment page thing. They're a visual nightmare and a functional DISASTER. Between this and delicious and AO3, I can't even. And screw anyone with dialup I guess, because having no option other than to load all your icon images every time you want to leave a comment must be super-fun for them.

...if anyone is on Dreamwidth I am too, so add me if you wanna. They are offering free accounts for the next few days and I probably have a ton of invite codes by now as well.

+ The Hobbit trailer has brought my Tolkien feelings back. Well, that and an impending yearly LOTR extended version marathon coming up next month.

+ Uploaded a ton of music over on my tumblr (more links at the bottom of the post), my faves of 2011 if you wanna check it out. If I can finish knitting these Christmas presents, I will post the links over here in the next couple days, be easier.

+ Still knitting! I'm still having fun with it, and getting better and better even if I don't quite have the dough to enable my yarn addiction. Which is probably a good thing. Right now I'm working on a hat for my dad and a shawl for my mom that I hope I can finish by Christmas. Luckily I'm not going out of town so I'm free to work up to the last minute, like I do~

I also love to TALK about knitting, so.

+ The other thing I've decided I want to get into finally in the new year is makeup. Which I have never worn...ever. Kind of ridiculous seeing as I'm a grown-ass woman, but I just never really learned how? And I want to. So I've been grilling friends for tips and I'm pretty excited. Decided I'm going to try Bare Minerals for foundation and maybe get one of those Naked palletes for my eyes if I can swing it. I'm taking recs if you have favorite eyeliners and lip stuff and whatever else.

+ I'll stop here I think. Happy Hanukkah, and Merry Christmas if I don't post again before then! Come say hi if you wanna; I'm gonna go work on replying to messages and stuff.

Gonna do a quick friday five meme I spotted on [livejournal.com profile] dreamon_dreamer's journal!

1. What was the last book you read, and what is your opinion of it?
A Feast for Crows by George R R Martin. It's probably my favorite of the series so far, tied with A Storm of Swords. My issue with the ASOIAF books is that it often takes me a ridiculously long time to get through chapters for characters that don't interest me as much or for whom Martin's prose is especially rambly, because for all that I love the characters, the actual reading experience is...kind of a chore for me. AFFC has the highest percentage of POV chapters that don't bore me, so it's kind of my favorite by default. Also HOUSE MARTELL FOREVER <3

Around the same time, or close enough that I'm not sure which was first, I finished volume 1 of the Fullmetal Alchemist manga. Delightful.

2. What was the last movie you saw, and what is your opinion of it?
Attack the Block. Legit one of my favorite movies of the year! Funny, charming, touching, really great performances, with some sharp social commentary that I wasn't expecting. Nice soundtrack, too. Definitely one of the best genre films I've seen in quite a while. Also I want the kid who played Moses to be in all the things; everyone was adorable though.

3. What was the last TV show you saw, and what is your opinion of it?
The last episode of anything that I watched was episode 4x10 of The Wire, "Misgivings". I've seen it twice already so it's part of my rewatch, but my opinion is the same as my opinion for all of season four, which is CRYING FOREVER.

In terms of current stuff, this week I watched the most recent episodes of Sons of Anarchy (not bad), True Blood (I've officially and permanently broken up with that show), and Lost Girl (delightfulll). Giving the new season of Vampire Diaries a miss for now. When Bonnie turns back up, I'll marathon what I missed. /iregretnothing.gif

4. What was the last album you bought / downloaded, and what is your opinion of it?
Soundtracks for Attack the Block. Definitely recommended if you've seen it. I also downloaded the new St Vincent album around the same time but I haven't listened to it yet. I'm not that well-versed in St Vincent's other stuff, I just love her face and I've heard good things about this album.

5. What was the last meal you cooked, and how did it turn out?
I actually cooked for the first time in a few weeks on Wednesday, but it wasn't anything special. It was just this chicken pasta salad thingy but it was really tasty and colorful and had veggies. Balanced meals, y'all. I'm such a fucking adult.

GUYS I'm watching the election results and the results in PA are too close to call atm (hold me), and I'm trying not to cry/throw up over Rand Paul (RAND PAUL) being elected in Kentucky and Marco Fucking Rubio being elected in FL, sooooo.... idk have some music?

Doctor Who Series 5 Soundtrack by Murray Gold

It's SO GOOD, in that way of great TV scores that call back the best moments of the series. As an ALBUM it could probably use some editing -- it has 60something tracks and they're all over the place; literally every clip of score that was ever used in the episodes, lol. But there are about 10-12 tracks that make the whole thing worth it.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 OST by Alexandre Desplat

OMG I LOVE IT. It's dark and so much more mature than the previous scores; even the more whimsical bits feel heavier. And there's some seriously beautiful, moving tracks in the bunch. I think the Prisoner of Azkaban score might be my favorite still, but this is up there.

...In other news, I am still a little bit in love with Rachel Maddow.

I know, I know, I just posted. But I just heard the most gorgeous song and wanted to share:

To Build a Home, by The Cinematic Orchestra

Maybe this song is really old and I'm behind the times, but I don't really care. I would upload it, but I haven't found it yet. Will share when I do. XD

So, what to talk about ... how about random shit? I'm good at that. :D

** Well, about five minutes ago, I checked my userinfo and found that it's different; kind of a lot. Interesting. I'm not altogether sure I like it, but I'm sure it's just a matter of getting used to it. What do you all think? It's a bit smoother-looking, which isn't bad.

** I did read something in news about LJ possibly introducing some kind of a la carte option for buying userpic space. Does this mean I can get a whole hell of a lot of icons? We'll see. I'll keep you posted, because when and if there is more icon space, that is definitely reason for me to squee about it here.

** I'm kind of obsessed with Bloc Party's latest album, Intimacy. Can't stop listening to it. Not as good as their first album, and I don't love every song, but I still like how romantic and sort of vulnerable they sound even when they're uptempo and frenetic.

** So my company just renewed their contract with the NIH and did this big celebration staff party thing today off campus. Free food = good. There was also free alcohol, and for some reason it felt weird drinking in front of my boss. :P I only had a few sips. I think it's an age thing; my last boss was closer to my age (he was 27; I was 22), and he'd take us for happy hour sometimes, and I never felt odd.

** My coworker just got himself a brand-new iPhone, and let me tell you, that shit is shiny. *whines* I really, really want one. But even if I had an extra $200 lying around for the phone itself, the plan is just too expensive for me and I don't like that I'd have to switch to AT&T. On top of the voice plan, you have to shell out an extra $30 a month for the data transfer plan if you want to get online at all. At least according to him. It's kind of ridiculous, and I have a new car payment. So that's that. :P

** That'll do it for now, I guess. Hope everyone's good!

Picked up from a couple people; just put your library on shuffle and and post the first line of each song so people can guess what they are. Comments screened. Some of these might be hard, I dunno. For most of them I added more like the first two lines. XD

teh songs )
heathershaped: (Gaspard)
1. George Carlin is dead at 71. =( More bad news. He was brilliant and will be deeply missed.

2. I had a bit of a slow weekend. I got my hedges trimmed, because they were ridiculously high and uneven, by this kid who is saving up to buy a car. He did a good job, but he's such a little nerd. He kept knocking on my door to show me his tools. (Him: "see this?? this can cut through a two-by-four." Me: "Oh, cool..." *checks watch again*)

3. The rest of my weekend was spent RPing and watching three seasons of Weeds. That, my friends, is a great show. I love Showtime. I had a couple RP threads that I enjoyed, whether light and fun with puppies and Gryffindor reunions, or intense and a bit draining. Still majorly enjoying the game. *bounces around*

4. I want to do some writing this week, so some of those drabbles from a week ago will hopefully get posted over the next few days.

5. I went the whole weekend without watching cable news. I'm reaching a critical mass and might need a bit of a break. I never learn anything important from the MSM, anyway; if you want news, you have to work to find it. On a related note, the internet blogs I haunt are giving me a bit of chicken-little syndrome. But I need to toughen up and get over it. I'm going to stay cryptic about that because I don't usually post about political stuff. We'll see if I can keep that up through November. Oye.

6. I have the new Coldplay and Death Cab for Cutie albums and am enjoying them both. Both of them have a lot more production than I'm used to seeing from earlier albums. Especially the Coldplay one; just a lot going on, and makes me nostalgic for the quieter, more bare-bones quality of their first album. Still, I really enjoy Coldplay; they're a bit pretentious, but they still have that sound that just fills up your chest when you turn it up loud. :) And Death Cab is brilliant. of course.

7. Oh! Also. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is sexy and adorable and a little bit crazy and I love him. See the vid for floppy-haired evidence.

How are you guys? ♥
heathershaped: (hermione alone)
After, like, 8 hours straight of RPing, I am chilling and going to bed. I am putting my foot down. Much as I love it (like, really love it, people), [profile] stoatshead_hillcan't take over my life.

Plus, I'm bloody tired.

So, in the real life, but still fun, department, I'm posting to my  actual RL journal (what?! real life journal?) with some pimpage.

You guys need to pick up Damien Rice's latest album, 9, if you've not already; I just got it. Came out on the 14th. It's brilliant. I have his 2003 debut, O, as well, and gawd. I love that man. His music is lovely and angsty and makes me want to fall in love, like painfully, wonderfully, in love. And cry. lol. God. Like, it chokes me up, people.

Not to mention, it makes me want to write H/Hr.  I get inspired by songs alot, and I just...ooh, it just reminds me how much I love h/hr. Oh.

Good stuff. If you buy one album this year....well, obviously it'll be whatever you want. LOL. But, you know, you should get this one. HIGHLY recommended. I'm even now hearing it and squeeing.

That is all.
