+ Sigh. Not really getting comment notifications at all, so I'm really sorry for failing to reply to things. I've got to remember to manually check posts I've made/been in.

+ So Avatar opened and it SUCKS. (Not that I've seen it, but every. single. review I've read concurs that it's a total disaster on every level, even beyond the racism and sexism.) I wish the actors the best in their future endeavors but guys, I feel so perversely gleeful reading those reviews. And sad at the same time, because I knew there was fail, but I didn't realise how many cool characters were cut (Jun, Teo, Suki/the Kyoshi for example), and how little agency female characters were given compared to the series. How little agency ANY marginalized group was given compared to the series.

THAT SAID, M Night Shyamalan specifically is getting heavily scapegoated here and it's not right, for a lot of reasons. I don't like the guy or anything he chooses to be, but the responsibility for this film's fail hardly starts with him. It's reflective of a problem in Hollywood and society as a whole. [livejournal.com profile] glockgal has some excellent thoughts on this here. Glock, and racebending.com, have been utterly amazing through this whole thing. ♥

Anyway, next Friday [livejournal.com profile] bratkartoffel, [livejournal.com profile] cloverdew and I are watching series one all day. GOOD TIMES. And I made a picspam on tumblr to make myself feel better. So I'm good.

+ Changing tack, [livejournal.com profile] zahrawithaz has written some Doctor Who gender meta that I thought was pretty smart: On Sexualizing Amy Pond. Because it is both possible and preferable to unpack gender issues in media without tearing down the characters themselves.

+ I'm officially on staycation! Left work early today, and the holiday weekend should be gorgeous weather-wise, if a bit hot. Looking forward to getting out and enjoying it.

If any of you USians are traveling, I hope you have a safe trip!

So the live-action version of Avatar: The Last Airbender is going to be released on July 2. I would've loved to see a live-action version of the series I fell so hard (SO HARD) for on television, so it's kind of heartbreaking that it makes me so angry, that I can't feel any excitement or anticipation for it, that I actively hope that it tanks horribly at the box office.

This is the part where I strongly urge my friends and family not see it, or at least not to give the makers of that film a red cent of their money in order to see it.

A few people have asked me over the last week why I've chosen not to see it, what's been going on, etc. [livejournal.com profile] ssj10 has written a post that says more eloquently than I could why it IS a big deal, why it's not "just a kids' movie". If you have a minute, definitely read it.

These Are My Colours:

If you think that stories are not important, if you think a movie that just removed real world people from the landscape of a source material that respected and loved their 5000 years of culture and history is no big deal, if you've never known what it means to be erased from your own world and told to be thankful for it, I want you to do something for me.

Stop thinking. Stop feeling. Put down your books, put down your pens, forget your stories. Close your eyes and plug your ears. Forget what your story sounds like. You have no myths. You have no history. Stop breathing with your heart and living in your head. Your dreams are worthless, because they are not real. They are not tangible. You can't sell them. They are worthless. Go outside and consume, consume, consume. But never question. Never speak. Never dare to feel that you've been malnourished or mistreated. Never, ever admit that you have been poisoned. Be satisfied; you are well fed.

Remember: It's no big deal. It doesn't matter. And neither do you.

+ I watched Glee. spoilers for Dream On )

+ Apparently marathoning Avatar: TLA has triggered some kind of hysteria in my brain that I didn't get when I was watching the show from week-to-week. I mean, I still recognized at the time that it is one of the best total-package television shows ever created, but I wasn't tempted to get into fandom or anything - partly because I'd heard said fandom was CRAZY, and partly because I was over in HP fandom, not really shopping for other fandoms, and besides no one I knew was watching/it's rarely fun to try and fan a show all by yourself.

Right now? I am experiencing an ALL-CONSUMING LOVE AND GLEE that almost makes me wish I'd participated in the cray-cray fandom at the time. Maybe the recent swell of fail!movie news is throwing me into a more intense love of the real series, or maybe I just like being able to squee along with other people, idk.

I figured Doctor Who was going to be my all-consuming Merlin hiatus distraction this year, as SGA and BSG were last year. And while Who is still my favorite show airing at the moment, my fannish ardor is cooling to the level I might have for any other show, being replaced with renewed SOKKA KATARA AANG TOPH AZULA ZUKO MAI TY LEE fervor. For now, anyway.

Which is to say, if anyone has links to their favorite fics or rec lists, I would be very much obliged. I don't even know where to start. My fave characters are Katara, Sokka, Aang, Toph, Azula, Mai, Ty Lee, Zuko, Iroh... EVERYONE, BASICALLY. And their relationships with each other. Aang/Katara transcendental loooove, Mai/Zuko adorableness, Sokka/pretty much anyone, Azula/Ty Lee, Azula's fascinatingly fucked-up dynamics with pretty much everyone she ever met, 'specially the other Fire Nation chicas. Lahv, lahv, lahv.

Also, everyone should watch Avatar. No such thing as too late. The end.
