Huh

I'm not intentionally spamming or anything but...

The whole Dreamwidth thing; what gives? I hadn't even heard about it until just this week, but apparently this is that new fandom-friendly LJ-esque service about which there has been buzz for over a year now. Are any of you planning to get one? I don't mind grabbing an account if people I know are going over there (because I can never resist trying new shiny things), even if I have no earthly intention of leaving LJ.

The fact that there is already an an inaugural comment!porn meme is a good sign.

This stuff just makes me worry more about fandom dissipating, though. Sigh.

*looks into setting up an OpenID while I read more about what gives*

I've never heard of this either.

This makes me feel better. XD

We already talked about this... I sorta checked it out with OpenID yesterday, but I have a feeling the OpenID doesn't really work like a regular account - I couldn't see where I had a "journal" anywhere... it just took me back to the place I logged in with my OpenID. :/

Totally baffled by it all.

I am wondering the same thing and am similarly baffled.

Is it just me, or are you all of a sudden seeing links about it everywhere?

[identity profile] likespring.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
This is the fourth or fifth "fandom-friendly" LJing service that everyone is talking about migrating over to... and then they never do! So I'm not even going to bother.

Yeah, I'm only going to do it if friends go over, so I can comment and such. *shrug*

Your icon is ~mesmerizing~.

Sounds like a plan.

And isn't he~.

I've been getting the news letters/updates for it for a while, it looks to be very, very promising. They're doing all the stuff that we wish LJ would do (like with friending/subscribing and stuff there are more options than just "add this friend", or whatever). A lot of the people who left LJ who worked for LJ are the ones setting it all up. I'm really looking forward to it :D :D :D

[identity profile] heather11483.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
So you're getting one? Reading up on it has been interesting (and does look promising), and it looks like a LOT of people are heading over, which makes me nervous frankly, because I like my LJ and my fandom. :P

Also ... will you has invite codes? *is still mightily confuzzled about how to even get on there*

From what I know there's going to be this nifty cross posting option to make it easy to post from other journals! :D I won't be leaving LJ, but I probably (or hopefully) will be using DW frequently too for fandom and such. I have that other one, I can't think of the name, inksplotched, or whatever it is, I can't think of the name, but it just goes to show how little I use that.

BUT ANYWAY, I have an Open ID over there, but if I don't get an invite code, I'll buy one. It's only $3 for the lowest one, so YEY! :D

[livejournal.com profile] synecdochic is building it. She used to work for LJ, and has been taking LJ's code and tinkering with the weird parts (e.g., the comment size limit is way bigger; the concept of how the flist works is split into a read and a trust...). The place isn't open for accounts yet (the accounts that exist are the folks building and helping with code and beta and stuff), but will be very soon.

You can see her LJ for more; she's "denise" over there. I dunno if she's tagged why she's doing all this so much, but I imagine if you really wanna know, you could read back and find out.

Above comment on this being the fourth or fifth--well, both this and OTW are active organizations that have been *building something* for a year and change; it's just that they're trying to look at what exists and build something stable with checks and balances and without building a *business* for it. This takes time.

I like some of what I've been reading about it (not enough to jump-ship or anything, but it looks like there'll be a small-but-growing group over there, Creating Things, and if the crossposting is as easy as it seems, it might be worth getting into so that I can read, follow, and comment on those Things with ease).

Also, zomg no kidding about the comment length!!

Blah, whatever. I'm staying put. I'm sick of all these ~*~fandom exodus~*~ shit tbh and honestly I haven't heard any fandom hoopla since late 2007. Also, I don't want anything with "dream" in a possibly blog name tbh, lolz. Seems sorta fluffy.

The whole ~Dreamwidth~ name is very hokey, this is true. *g*

I first heard about it a couple of months ago when there was upset over the LJ Design (?) people who were laid off, that was when the preparations for this seemed to really kick off and get talked about, although they'd been started many months earlier.

I'll be getting one, probably buying a year's paid account to get in. Not that it matters because I never post anyway. :P But I've been in online fandom for ten years and am not about to leave anytime soon, and this has a solid feel to me, much more so than Insanejournal that just happened to be there and suddenly got a big influx of LJ discontents. This one's being built with a lot of care and there are lots of high-profile fandom names involved in the effort and I do get the feeling that this will become something solid.

Although I'll still be roleplaying on LJ, and picking up pb icons on IJ, and crossposting any fic (*hopeful*) both here and there and everywhere. Ha. Maybe fandom won't be dissipating so much as we'll get used to there being several such sites to check out for various content? After all, before LJ (which was X-Files fandom for my part) there was usenet and mailing lists and forums and sites everywhere, and we kept track of them all. :)

The more I read, and the more people I see who seem to be at least crossposting back and forth if not leaving altogether, the more I think I'll be trying to either obtain an invite code or buy an account. It seems a lot more well-thought out than the other 'exoduses' (exodi? exodae? whatever. *g*).

It looks like cross-posting would be pretty easy, which is a big plus since I won't be leaving LJ. (I could never figure Semagic out.) And some of the folks who are getting DW accounts are folks I still want to keep up with, so I think I'll give it a try. I love how the girl who's running it seems to be marketing it so far, getting lots of input and involvement from people.

And thanks for the perspective re: fandom dissipating; I hadn't thought of that before. I know personally, I don't mind clicking around to keep track of people if that's what it takes. *clings to fandom*

[identity profile] writersblock76.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
*is clueless*

Yeah...read through all the comments and STILL have no idea what you guys are talking about, LOL. Of course, I didn't know about the extent of LJ fandom until a year ago, so I'm definitely not going anywhere.... ;)

[identity profile] heather11483.livejournal.com 2009-04-03 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL! It's beyond confuzzling. I'm not leaving, either. Before you got into LJ, I reckon, there used to be some drama in which the LJ higher-ups were basically not being at all clear about their terms of service, and punishing users for it by deleting their accounts without warning when they violated these murkily-explained terms, and it was one of the biggest LJ wanks I've ever seen. Since then, fandom at large has been trying to figure out where they could go that isn't LJ, and after quite a few attempts to try other journaling services, one of them (or one of us I guess, a high-profile fandomer) who used to work for LJ upped and started her own service, and that's what Dreamwidth is.

LJ will still be plenty active, though, I hope.

So....another possible location for an exodus? *sigh* I give up. I don't even care how promising it sounds, as that's happened a fair number of times. I have so many accounts I don't even remember some of them it seems. This time, I'm not going to believe it (or rather utilize it) until I see it.

Of course, staying in ignorance will make this most legit thing since the frustration that is insanejournal.

Let me know if it comes to anything please? lol. Otherwise I'm just going to hole up in my little corner of LJ fandom and be perfectly satisfied.

[identity profile] krwlngwthyou.livejournal.com 2009-04-05 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no idea...

then again, I have no idea for a lot of what goes on at LJ lol. Sometimes I think I live under an LJ rock.
