The comments on that Rolling Stone article are toxic.

I should have probably stopped reading after the article itself so I could be left with a feeling of happiness at Adam being adorable and fabulous. He says he doesn't really want to be a civil rights leader in any way, but at the very least he's set himself up as a fun role model.
