wait, so

New Facebook and Twitter crossposting option for LJ.

I'm confused, so people can actually crosspost their individual comments in other peoples' journals onto Twitter and Facebook (which would include a link back to the entry)? Even if it's f-locked or screened?

If this is true, then it's not so terrible because if the post that the FB entry links back to is locked, strangers who follow the link would only see Frank anyway. Still, it makes me uncomfortable and seems like another way for LJ to be pointlessly annoying. Since I'd never use this feature, it wouldn't really bother me, except that we can't opt out of having our journals linked back by other people, so I think it does bother me, a lot.

Also, frankly, Facebook... kind of annoys me? And I do not want even my public posts to be floating around on there, so can I just say, those of you who comment here, if you could not crosspost any of those comments to your Twitter or FB page that would link back to my journal? No, seriously. I'm considering disabling comments and shuttling people over to my DW posts to avoid this. For some reason I don't mind my stuff getting linked around fannish spaces, but Facebook is an entire world of stupid that I generally like to limit my participation in. Not to mention the separation between RL and fandom that I've managed to maintain pretty well up until now.

So... I reckon that's all I have to say about that. (except, I have about 10 DW invite codes for whoever wants one.)

eta: Nifty! Firefox users, if you download Greasemonkey and use this script, you can apparently make this problem go away without LJ's help. I'm going to try it when I get home.

1. Depending on context of post and comment, it would be easy to out someone in ways they really don't want.

2. Because some people (not me, but some) use keyboard shortcuts to hit "post comment" and not those keyboard shortcuts will post the comment to FB, it can happen accidentally.

3. Pingbacks could easily mean giving out your own identity to people you don't want to by posting a link at Facebook.

NOT COOL.

The Greasemonkey script, as I understand it, only fixes the problem halfway. It only works on some kinds of comments (like, not replies to comments, I think?) and also doesn't prevent people who have turned on the damn thing universally from doing it (but removes their option to opt out for an individual comment).

Do the people making these things somehow not have any capacity to think of potential problems? I mean really.

There's also the whole pingback crap, which will now also work on f-locked entries, so a portion of that post will be included in the pingback notice. Faaail.

I start to think LJ is doing that on purpose so that everyone is moving over to DW.

Seriously, though, I don't get the whole Facebook thingy, and why everyone and their mother seem to think it's necessary today to x-post there. Not that I have a Facebook account anymore, but a lot of people I know online have an online alter ego, and a RL alter ego. The latter they use on Facebook (poor idiots, there are easier ways to publish private information on the WWW), while they have an LJ etc. for fannish purposes...

The Greasemonkey script apparently only stops you form accidentally x-posting to FB/twitter, but everyone else still can do it...
One way or another that new LJ feature is stupid.
