Fic: Resolve (Hermione Granger)

Title: Resolve
Character: Hermione Granger
Rating: Any Age
Word Count: 936
A/N: This fic contains spoilers for DH. Summary is under the cut.

Summary: It was frustrating, not knowing where to go from there.

The candles had gone out, and Hermione woke to darkness with the feeling of metal against her back. Her knees were tucked against her chest, her head resting on top of them. After sitting like this for so long, the bed frame was warmed from her skin, but it was still more than a bit uncomfortable pressed against the curve of her spine. She'd been sitting pressed against the side of Harry's bed for a little too long, she realized.

Harry. Annoyed with herself for having drifted to sleep for even this long, Hermione looked around the small tent for him. When she didn't find him, she indulged in a brief moment of panic before she remembered that he'd gone on watch.

He had her wand.

Lifting a hand to push her hair out of her face, she felt tear tracks on her skin and remembered the past few hours. Harry's face, so stoic after the shock of finding that his own wand was broken beyond repair, his tone so unaffected as she'd handed him her own to use on watch tonight. But he'd hardly been able to look at her before he'd left, and that had gotten across far more clearly than his matter-of-fact tone. Her eyes slid shut as she felt fresh guilt, and an ever-mounting despair. Ron was gone, the sword they needed was as elusive as ever, and there was now only one wand between the two of them.

Unsettled, Hermione got to her feet and wrapped her arms around herself as she stood in the dark. Harry needed the wand far more than she did at the moment, but she couldn't prevent the feeling of helplessness she got from being alone in the tent without one. She hated this feeling. She wanted to run to her bag and examine her texts again, to write more lists, if only to feel as if they were getting somewhere. There was always the chance that she'd missed something in one of the books. And maybe it wouldn't even be useful to them right then but, well, if it was later, somewhere down the track -- then she'd know. She'd know the answer, and she'd be ready.

It was ... well it was frustrating, not being sure of where to go, of what to do next. She'd done so much reading and planning up until now; she'd pored over the books she'd brought along, and it had helped to ease the niggling doubts and concerns. But it was times like this when she was forced to look up and face the fact that they really had no idea where to go from there.

They were fresh from the horror of finding Nagini waiting for them at Godric's Hollow, of barely escaping Voldemort, and things had never seemed quite so bleak.

She couldn't have admitted that to Harry any more than she'd been able to admit her concerns before Ron had left. Truthfully, she didn't much like admitting it to herself. But when she was alone in their tent, and it was just her and all she could hear for miles was harsh wind blowing through the trees, it was only too easy to let those thoughts in. Just for a little while.

How would they be able to defend themselves properly when one of them was wandless? Thinking about all the danger they'd come up against so far, it was difficult not to be afraid. If Ron were there, perhaps, there would at least be two of them to cover at any given moment. As it was, they were all the more vulnerable, and would need to be extra careful once they inevitably needed to move again.

Moving to the door of the tent, Hermione opened the flap and looked out. Without a wand, she shouldn't leave the relative protection of the tent, but Harry was out there alone. What if something happened, and her wand didn't work properly for him? When she didn't see him immediately, she frowned and scanned the trees until she spotted the glow of her own wand in the distance and knew he was there.

A dark spot over the snow caught her eye and she glanced down. The moonlight filtered through the tree branches, just barely illuminating the shoe tracks in the snow at her feet. They criss-crossed back and forth through the snow in front of their tent, right along the entrance. She didn't have to see the discarded over-jacket in the snow to know they were Harry's footprints.

"Oh, Harry," she whispered, feeling new resolve moving through her veins as she thought of him holding her wand and guarding the tent, protecting her.

She didn't know the answers -- not yet -- but right then, she knew all she needed to. It wasn't the time for uncertainty or doubt when she needed to be strong. It was just like always, wasn't it? She would do whatever it took to keep him safe. For all her constant planning and searching for answers, that was where they'd always been the strongest, anyway.

How could she not believe in him? In them?

Hermione stared at the tracks for a few beats before she ducked back into the tent and moved to light the candles again. If Harry came back before morning, the tent wouldn't be dark. And she had reading to do.

Oh, I am so glad you decided to write this moment...that part was just so bleak, and Harry was so worried that Hermione was going to leave him too. It was nice to read how she resolves not to :)
