Adventures in Blogging #2

Today I went canvassing around my neighborhood, trying to get out the vote for my guy. I went into the office at around 10 am, but it was so slow that I ended up hanging around the office until some more canvassers started showing up. I didn't particularly fancy canvassing alone. I don't mind that; I man the office often anyway, and it's fun talking to the other people there and such. It really picked up around 12:30-1pm, and it's great seeing people who came into town from all over -- Baltimore, Philly, Boston. Just coming to help get out the vote this weekend. Eventually I got paired with this spry old guy from MD who was really quite sweet. I was dressed pretty warmly because it's about 50 degrees right now, and I grabbed a bottle of water because we were going on foot.

You guys, I had no idea my neighborhood was so fucking big, and we only covered a fraction of it. Some of the houses were close together at least, but many of them were spread out, even on the same street, and on foot it was a beast. We spread out in some places, but he was hesitant to leave me on my own for very long (aww). We were out from about 12:40 to 3:20, nothing but walking. Fortunately, we didn't have to stop and talk to anyone unless they wanted to talk -- we were given a list of likely Democratic voters, who had mostly been contacted before, and our job this weekend is simply to make sure they know when and where to vote, and make sure they make it out on Tuesday. We'd leave hangers on their door with all the info and just keep walking. Only a few people were even home or noticed us. One is voting for Nader after the bailout bill, and another's voting for McCain because he's worried that their company is getting taxed too much because they have plants overseas. He's concerned he'd lose his job if the company had to cut costs to pay taxes. Good point, but if his job is outsourced, he definitely loses it. So we explained that to him and went on our way. At this point, we're not trying to convince anyone or waste time debating -- time is short and this weekend's about getting out the vote.

Anyway, I am tired and thinking about how much my legs are going to ache in the morning. Time flew by, though, and it was fun talking to Old Guy and hearing why he's supporting Obama. There are canvassing shifts going out this weekend all over the country and it was great being part of that. Obama actually gave a conference call to the Adams County team last night, incidentally -- he actually talked to them! They were so excited, and I'm sorry I missed it. But he's really urging us not to become complacent, etc. We might not win Adams County. It's a pretty red area, though we've found more support than we thought. I think Obama's going to get a lot more votes there than Kerry did, and the level of organization he's got in these small towns has never been seen before, so we might be suprised. It's all about making inroads and also pushing the down-ticket candidates, as well.

So, that was my day. Really productive overall, if tiring. Off to do some beta-ing and hopefully some RP.

I hope you guys have had a great weekend! ♥♥♥
