Randomry
THE WORST F-LISTER EVER. I have not touched LJ since sometime Saturday, I'm sorry, I'm the worst. How's everyone doing? I'm catching up with posts atm, but I have some random tidbits:
+ It is so obnoxiously Monday. I did not want to get up. I have had four days off. I did not want to get up. Also I took some thanksgiving food home from my folks' house on Thursday and now it's all gone. Except for some lingering cranberry sauce, I think.
+ Going to Miami on the 18th to see some family for the hols. *\o/*
+ I fixed my laptop all by myself yesterday! *dances* I basically just replaced the hard drive and restored the system to factory, and it was ridiculously easy, but I still feel like a BAMF.
+ The Wire: still the greatest. Rewatching was a good life choice.
+ Been mainlining a lot of new music lately. Ever go on these insane downloading binges, too fast to actually let stuff sink in properly? My music folder is so fat right now. My favorites right now are the Tron OST and Kanye's latest, and various random songs I've been grabbing here and there.
+ Augh, Misfits. I don't need to be getting into more shows that aren't good for me. What is wronnnnng with me. I'll tell you what's wrong with me: Antonia Thomas' face is what's wrong with me. This show! On the one hand it's preposterous, it makes no sense to me half the time, Nathan plucks my nerves more often than not (less so this season), Alisha and Curtis are sidelined (Curtis more than Alisha recently), and I'm still not over Alisha's bullshit "power" and how it was heavily coded as some kind of punishment for her promiscuity and how fucking gross is that? And why does it only seem to be men? And all manner of other things it's best not to dwell on.
On the other hand it's hard to look away from, the cast is charming, Kelly is a BAMF, I love Simon, and augh. SO yeah, I've been continuing to watch and hope for some more characterization for Alisha. This week we finally got some! I like that more was done with her than just having dudes touch her and go crazy. This storyline with future!Simon has been surprisingly sensitively handled and so much about HER -- her feelings and her choices and how future!Simon was careful to keep it that way (right down to that effing amazing love scene - actual cunnilingus on tv homg way to go Overman and E4). It also explored how difficult things have been for her and had a side benefit of making her see current!Simon differently and think about how she's always treated him. Meanwhile future!Simon's clearly come back to save her life, and I'm wondering how that'll shake out. My guess is they can't be together now as well as in the future, so whatever he has to do now to stop her dying could mean giving up his future with her. I love future!Simon sfm. And:

Surprise!OTP for sure. They have RIDICULOUS chemistry and they look gorgeous and Antonia and Iwan are so good, so good. It's also super-interesting to see how current!Simon becomes future!Simon. I would feel bad about Curtis, but for one, the tensions in his relationship with Alisha make sense and are interesting, and for two, looks like he's heading for a romance with that gorgeous badass mystery girl anyway.
+ There's sadness about Merlin on my f-list. I'm sad to see friends losing their enjoyment of the show and/or fandom, even though I totally understand it. I come at it from a different perspective I guess; I see the show exactly the same as I have since the very first season: a badly written, sometimes-charming show that I watch for Gwen and the people who are nice to her. JUST BEIN' REAL, though I doubt it'll surprise anyone. Morgause and other fits and bursts of good writing are a nice bonus. Actually, overall I've been liking this season -- even stuff that Gwen wasn't in, lol. Or more accurately I guess, the things I haven't liked about it (namely the genderfail, gross moral relativism, and sidelining of certain characters/storylines) are the same things I've hated from day one. But I feel like once it's over, I could rewatch this season all the way through rather than selected episodes as I do with the first two seasons. I like all the material Merlin and Gwen have had as characters, some of Arthur's stuff, Pendragons own my soul, and even Morgana's arc has become strangely fascinating to me in the last couple episodes in terms of her dynamics with the people she betrayed. There's so much that needs fleshing out, but that's what fandom is supposed to be for.
ANYWAY YEAH, IDK, IT'S ALMOST OVER AND I'M FEELING STRANGELY AFFECTIONATE ABOUT IT ALL. I look forward to the hiatus and hope it brings lots of fic as everyone processes it, but I will miss Merlin Day flailing. I think I will try to do a post-mortem of some sort for the season, though I said I'd do that after S2, and... well.
+ Good luck to those scrambling to finish NaNo, and congrats to those of you who've finished! ♥

Her jaw was dropping to the floor.
I wanted to dump this show after the first episode and was encouraged to keep watching. I think that the show has used Alisha's bullshit 'power' to tell a really good story and to sneak in, without sacrificing the show, some awesome behaviour modelling for their audience.
