in which i have more thoughts about Community
For a show I haven't mentioned here all season, I seem to have a lot to say all of a sudden. BUT JUST.
See aforementioned full-disclosure and take this post with however much salt you like, but:
+ the age difference between Jeff and Annie is not, in my opinion, even on the short-list of problems with that episode, or with Jeff/Annie as presented. (And Jeff is not a pedophile, ffs, nor is it at all funny to joke about pedophilia or make gross macros about it, INTERNET.) The problem is that, in setting up the Jeff/Annie, Britta got humilated and her character assasinated, to say nothing of Slater, who as far as I'm concerned was a cool chick too. As someone who ships Jeff/Annie like fiyah, that doesn't sit right with me.
+ Relatedly, the fact that Britta did not ~win Jeff, or that Jeff did not choose Britta, is in my opinion not even remotely in the sphere of things wrong with what happened to Britta in the episode. The problem with what happened to Britta in this episode stems from the fact that Dan Harmon projects his past girlfriends onto Britta and is thus choosing to tear her down in a completely gross way. The declaration of love was out of character (given she is nowhere near that open with feelings and hadn't even admitted to liking him at that point) and unnecessary and seemed designed to make what ultimately happened even more painful.
In general I have enjoyed Britta's character progression over the series and the gradual unpacking of her flaws and/or hangups, because it has been a) adorable and b) coupled with Jeff learning how not to be such a dick and Britta calling him on his bullshit. Which is why I was totally okay with Jeff/Britta had the show gone that way even though it's not what I usually go for (that slap/slap/kiss, bickering-as-tension thing). Turns out? The moral of the story suddenly became that Jeff is in fact Perfect, and Britta totally needs to loosen up and get up on that. NOT COOL, SHOW.
sainfoin_fields puts that complete reversal of a very promising character arc into words much better than I could.
I keep going back to the hair-touching thing that I briefly mentioned in my other post. It was a small thing that no one else has mentioned so possibly I am being a bit weird about this (also I guess I relate to Britta's Thing about uninvited touching, particularly when it comes to hair), but I still can't let go of it as a microcosm of Jeff and Britta's whole arc, such as it is. Because we had Jeff making an unwelcome and presumptuous move on Britta, and Britta being all "whoa, dude" and demonstrating that it's alarming when someone randomly reaches out and touches your hair. I laughed, I thought it was spot-on, and good on Britta (and very consistent with her character all series). But then it turned into a situation where Britta was wrong to react that way, that she just needs to get over her issues, and less about Jeff not making unwelcome and presumptous moves. Sort of like how this whole season turned out for them.
I hate that "jaded type-A girl, needs to loosen up" trope.
Anyway, anyway, in case it is not clear, I quite love Britta and find this whole thing Upsetting. AND NOT BECAUSE SHE DIDN'T GET THE GUY, FFS.
+ Also, Internet? The "tranny" gag was transphobic. It's not funny. It's the show crossing the line from humour-as-commentary and into hipster-dom.
+ I still love everything Troy and Abed said and did, and everything Annie chooses to be. And, it needed more Shirley.
+ Jeff/Annie is adorable (which doesn't mean ppl are weird for not shipping it, it just happens to be how I feel about it). Not only does it not squick me, it actually makes sense to me, and given that, I resent that the show cast a pall over what should have been an all-out feelings explosion, I mean LOOK AT THEM.

alkfalkfhalkhfahfhnnnnng. FEELINGS. One of the best moments of the season, happening in the WORST EPISODE of the season -- which means that, for all Community likes to make fun of Glee? It has ironically BECOME Glee for 23 minutes.

In other news, I have almost an entire season of Parks and Rec to catch up and I'm looking forward to it now more than ever.

(haven't actually watched the eppy yet, and now I kinda don't want to. Community has been such a happy place. And everything needs more Shirley.)
And the show can tell me Annie is 18 all it want, my brain reads her as early/mid-twenties.
