brb emailing SyFy
Where to even begin.
You know, I already have issues with SyFy because of relative trivialities, like the name "SyFy" and the slogan, "Imagine Greater." (Imagine greater what?) Then one day they decided to really give me something to get angry about.
This morning, I was doing what I assumed would be a routine check of my f-list, when I saw that SyFy has put up a website for Merlin, the second season of which will be airing on that network next month. I was all "YAY PROMOTIONS" and clicked over to see, and looool, I should have guessed.
Basically they never watched the show or even, by the looks of it, read the Beeb's official descriptions of the show/its characters. But when I got to the writeup on Gwen (also known as Gwynevere or however that's spelled; they can't be arsed to check), that was pretty much it.
Particularly this bit:
Firstly, let's get the lulz out of the way: Glasses? Wonky teeth? Apparently Gwen is Hermione crossed with "Ugly" Betty and this show is Not Another Medieval Teen Movie. All she needs is a potion to straighten her hair and an invite to the Yule Ball and she'll be pretty and everything will be peaches.
Secondly, I don't even want to spend much time on the beauty thing or I may never stop. Sign me up to be as not-beautiful as this:
.
And we'll leave it at that before I get to the "pretty girl"/"ugly girl" dichotomy they've set up between Morgana and Gwen despite their collective hotness, or get into my thoughts on ~conventional beauty~ not to mention 'uncooperative hair', or the fact that yeah, I really wanted to see an official source anywhere calling Gwen unattractive when I can get that on IMDB and YT and wherever else.
Thirdly, I must have missed the scenes where Gwen had time to think about her looks or wonder if anyone will ~ever see her for who she truly is~ despite the specs or whatever. Must have been while she was doing her super-cool job for Uther, you know, the job she loves because it keeps her away from her humdrum reality and her family.

+ In non-Merlin news, Barbie does Mad Men. 1) Cool, 2) needs moar Peggy and 3) Joan's doll is FAR from anatomically correct. Just sayin'.

If there's one thing Gwen might wish for, it's that she could be just a little bit prettier. With her wonky teeth, uncooperative hair and glasses, not even the most charitable person could call her beautiful. She secretly wishes that someone would see beyond the obvious and like her for the person she is...but in Camelot, she doubts that will ever happen.
