Skins 4x05

I know I haven't reviewed Skins at all this season and I hate to be negative the first time I do, but whatevs.

I think the only thing that could've saved it for me would've been if Tony had somehow showed up.

First things first, I've really been liking the season overall; I've found Freddie less annoying, the Naomily is beautifully handled so far, Cook's episode was BRILLIANT, it's still one of the prettiest shows in the UK right now in terms of cinematography and music. ETC.

That said, I don't think I could've been more annoyed with this episode. I'll be honest; I've never really liked (or understood, I guess is the word) Effy as a character for quite a few reasons, but I'm still extremely pissed that they've taken this direction with her, just sent her completely around the twist so they could plumb Freddie's manpain. I felt for him and all, but it was a good old-fashioned fridging and I don't care that they executed it with cool music and pretty camera angles and Luke's face.

I never bought Freffy as epic love, but I was never sure that we were supposed to; I just thought they liked each other a lot and that was fine. A little boring, but fine. This episode just turned it a bit skeevy and became more about him trying to save Effy the way he couldn't save his mother. (Once again all about him and not about WHY Effy is depressed and psychotic or whatever. I mean you could assume it's because her parents are 1) shitty and 2) not around; you can assume it's because her brain is approximately 65% white powder at this point; you can assume a lot of things, but the ep was so clearly more about what it means for him. eta: Not that the reasons for this stuff need to be linear or logical, but it was lazy writing).

Her being so suddenly extremely sick and suicidal and the fact she's been conveniently fighting off the people in her head until now, is just ... lame. I can buy her erratic behavior leading up to it, I guess. It's not like it's a stretch. But it just seemed a way to handwave her weird characterization throughout the series. I still don't even know who she is.

Also lame? Cook being back. And I love Cook! But it was frustrating. His exit in 4x03 was sad but it was needed. He seemed to understand that at the time, that he needed to get his life back on track. But now, because he's needed to bond with Freddie for this plot, they have him break out of jail, back to "ah, fuck it I was just bullshittin'" again and erasing the character development. The scene at the end with the hug was nice, but by then I was already annoyed.

And what was the random parade about and why are all the adults in the show such total OTT caricatures?

I don't know. Great music, though. Next up, Being Human.
