OH MY GOD
In other words, I have seen Merlin 2x12, The Fires of Legolas Iolas Igolas Irdisajldhaklfaolas.
First things first:
You guys have no idea how POSITIVE I was that Merls would blast her into pieces like he does all the witches, so I'm GIDDY to know that she yet lives.
That's about the only thing I was giddy about this week, though. This episode was HEAVY, you guys; heavier than I can remember any episode being. And everything's messed up now but it was SO MUCH BETTER than last week's, if even more depressing.
I'll be honest, I can't comment on how good the episode was, it's hard for me to separate my sadness from my assessment of the quality. But it packed a punch and was well-acted, so. Also, this is jumbled and took longer than it should have.
Character by character again, shall I?
Morgana: Didn't do ... anything. I still don't get what the writers are doing with her right now; I don't get why she never gets to DO anything. She had Uther's life in her hands THREE TIMES and didn't do anything. Her being left alone with Uther so much seemed like a deliberate choice; they made a big deal of having Arthur tell her to keep him safe. So I guess it was meant to show that she was still on the fence? It might have been more effective if she had been tempted to kill him and decided against it, or something, IDK. It's not that I wanted her to kill him -- I realise she couldn't have done it with no way out and Arthur coming right back, but I just ... I don't know. If the writers want us to sympathize with her by making her a passive victim on her way to evil, I guess it's working. Even if it isn't what I wanted for her.
After what Merlin did, though, it'll be easier to believe her being able to turn away from everyone in Camelot and not just Uther. She'll be SO hurt and angry now.
I'm wondering what her role according to Morgause was supposed to be. She agrees to help and is promptly put to sleep and left alone in Camelot with everyone sick except for her so that she can look suspicious; how does Morgause think that's helping? Why not keep Morgana there with her? Probably just a plot hole, but it almost made it seem like she sent Morgana back to deflect suspicion off of herself for a while? Which doesn't jibe with the fact Morgause clearly cares so much about her.
Morgause: Speaking of which, Morgause was pretty awesome, and not just because she did not die. She was straightforward, and focused on Uther rather than just wanting to kill everyone, she had Morgana's best interests at heart, I think, or I hope. Morgana trusting her was so much more believable than last week's madness.
In the end I'm glad she took Morgana away; she was so protective and fierce and loving in the end. And it's nice to know someone knows about Morgana, cares about her and wants to take care of her. She deserves that and I hope she'll learn to embrace her power and not be scared of it. She's long overdue for some agency. I'm wondering where the show will take this and if we'll see Morgana next week.
Merlin: I love the kid, but he's ... he just keeps making shit worse, doesn't he? The whole tragedy of this is that he's trying to secure Arthur and his kingdom but every single step he takes leads everyone closer to tragedy. And makes some of the scariest decisions ever in the process, considering that along with his willingness to be cold as fuck, comes a chilling lack of thinking things through. He knew Morgause was there, he'd seen her, and he STILL thought Morgana was the one behind it?
Then, he actually poisoned her. POISONED her ith HEMLOCK. And it was painful, painful to watch her choking and looking at him that way, I seriously wanted to cry at the shock and betrayal on her face. It's too depressing to even think about.
And I know that for plot purposes they had to draw out her death, but him choosing such a slow method just makes him look thick - instead of just breaking her neck or something with a flick of his wrist, we had to watch her SUFFER, and watch him stand there in agony as she started to die, and she looked him right in the face so now she KNOWS what he did to her, and then she didn't end up dying anyway -- I mean, I'm GLAD she's okay, I'm just saying.
(Side note, I don't know how many of you guys watch Dexter, but Merlin pattern of keeping essential shit to himself so that he can avoid people asking him how he knows, then trying to stop the perps via his own methods seems vaguely familiar. Dex is better at it though. Maybe Merlin needs a Code of Harry.)
Arthur: He was lovely with Merlin, and his realisation that something was up with Morgana was nice to see - it's nice to see him putting things together when he is presented with information, nice to see him trying to figure things out even if he has a major knowledge handicap in every situation. It almost made up for the fact Merlin did magic in front of him twice and he didn't notice. But it always breaks my heart seeing how out of the loop he is for plot purposes, because he is SO dutiful and earnest and is just trying to keep his people and his family safe and do the right thing. He doesn't deserve to be shrouded in so much deceit all the time when he's just trying to do his best. I always end up feeling for Arthur and Gwen in eps like this because all they do all the time is what's expected of them, never anything less, and they just never know anything ever; they never know what's really happening with the people they care about.
Gaius: Oh, FFS. Morgana didn't choose to use her powers for evil. She didn't choose to use them for anything - she just plain IS NOT USING THEM AT ALL, PERIOD, WHAT ARE YOU EVEN TALKING ABOUT. What choice did she make, or does Merlin still think she was at fault for the enchantment? Just shut up, Gaius, shut up forever.
Gwen: I miss her? idk, at least she was there to have formal interactions with Morgana and be sick with Gaius and get put into bed by Arthur, but I miss her when she is on the periphery and it sucks a liiiiittle bit of the fun out of any given episode. I get that for plot purposes she had to spend the whole thing asleep but the show has such little regard for her sometimes, it seems. Morgana apparently found her passed out and did not care or try to move her or anything; she hid behind a curtain and left her on the floor. I'm sure the writers didn't want us to think of it that way but then, their interactions of late have been so formal, who knows. I'm just really freaking sad right now.
Now Morgana's gone, and I wonder if we'll ever see how Gwen's dealing with that, where she's working now, how she's feeling. Probably not. Next week looks jam packed enough as it is.
The Dragon: Still shipping the boys, blah blah, but I wish he'd make up his mind. Last week Morgana didn't have the power to wield the crystal, this week she has enough power to put everyone in Camelot to sleep and must be stopped? Whatever, whatever.
In general:
+ It was such a packed, heavy, properly chilling episode that was meant to leave us with unease, I'm sure. I think Show did its job even if I can't say I enjoyed watching most of it.
+ Speaking of chilling, the Dragon's last scene saying "I think there've been enough bargains, don't you?" was so perfectly played and ominous.
+ Continuity yay, a direct reference to 1x12 when Morgana had a chance to be Uther's assassin.
+ Knights still dropping like flies, I see.
+ Arthur pulling Uther this way and that at the table was the only part of the episode that made me laugh. ASH must have had fun with that. *g*
+ FINALLY something happened that wasn't reset! Two things - Morgana's disappearance and the Dragon's flight. CAN'T ACTUALLY WAIT FOR NEXT WEEK.
+ I'm too depressed to even contemplate the Morgana/Morgause potential, which is saying something. Maybe I'm just still mourning Gwen/Morgana.
Augh, idk. Thoughts?

Dragon: Merlin, you are such an idiot.
Merlin: idiot. Murderer. He's seriously got the reasoning capacity of a gnat. It's like 'consequence' is a word in a language so foreign its country hasn't discovered Britain yet.
Arthur: just gets better all the time, remarkably. Loved his care with Gwen, brushing the hair off her face, making sure she's comfortable.
Morgana: OMG. Morgana needs hugs and friends, she needs friends.
Morgause: Can we have a TV show called 'Morgause' please? Now? Yesterday? Because that would be awesome cool. Just like she is.
Uther: LOL Tony Head, you good sport.

*smdh*
I love Morgause, and I have serious problems with the way Morgana's being handled, but she needs all the hugs in the world anyway.
Arthur was SO LOVELY this week. He was at his absolute best, the heroism, the sense of duty, the tenderness with Gwen, the trying his best to make sense of things that make no sense. I just want to hug him all the time. And I may have watched him tuck Gwen to bed about 9237902 times.
SPEAKING OF UTHER. OBSERVE ARTHUR WITH SLEEPING!GWEN:
OBSERVE ARTHUR WITH SLEEPING!FATHER:
*apparently likes spamming you with gifs, sry*

It's kind of beautiful watching the two gifs at the same time.
Also, did Arthur cop a feel of Gwen's boob? A little brush with the back of his hand after he runs his hand down her hair?
(What? I am not watching it 9237902 times exactly>)
