Merliiiiin
I would just like to report that
inell is now all caught up with Merlin, now that I've forced her to mainline the entire first series. She likes it, AND she ships Uther/Morgana. *\o/*
JSYK. ANYWAY.
Late reaction post is late! But basically, BWEEE MY CHEESY CRACKY SHOW IS BACK.
I mostly loved it! There were things I didn't love, but overall, it was hilarious and awesome and it's fantastic to see the show stretching out its legs a bit with a clearly bigger budget, new and bigger sets, slightly better effects, and such.
+ Everyone looks FANTASTIC. Uther and Arthur both have more leather and deeper darker colors and look HOT in them, Morgana has a new nightgown for starters, and it's gorgeous, and we know there are more new outfits to come. Gwen... I could wax on about how amazing she looks for quite a while, and it's just her hair down and a new dress and a little makeup but MAN. Merlin has nothing new except the boots, and I wouldn't even know that if fandom hadn't spent time pointing them out and analyzing them months ago. XP But strangely, I don't have a problem with it; it's another one of those Smallville-esque things because by now, Merlin's outfit is kind of iconic, I suppose, like Clark's primary colors. It would be weird to make him change it or dress it up.
+ I love the new sets! There's a pub! I hope we get to see more of it, and LOL at it being called the Rising Sun.
+ TOO MANY MENSON THE DANCE FLOOR, SHOW. I mean, I loved every moment the boys were on screen but a little balance is good. It's pretty freaking inexcusable that the girls didn't show up until about ten minutes in. Seriously, I needed SO MUCH MORE of the both of them. If every ep could be more like Moment of Truth in terms of making use of the fact that this is an ensemble show, I would be happier. I understand ep2 and 3 may have more Gwen and Morgana respectively so I'm waiting for that.
+ BUT THEY HUGGED. For quite a while. (!!) And both looked beautiful. And it's good to know Gwen still sleeps in Morgana's chambers. *beams*
+ Speaking of which, Merlin's sleeping arrangements have changed, too - LOL at him being right there when Arthur called in the middle of the night. The girls did beat you to it, but that's all right.
+ SHIRTLESS ARTHUR WAS SHIRTLESS. He's such a big, broad guy, almost barrel-chested, innee. UNNNNF. But I can't help thinking he ought to spend some time outdoors without his shirt because he's verrrrry pale in his nekkidness. Or maybe I was just blinded by the hot and the low-hanging medieval sweatpants or whatever those were.
+ But Arthur, we need to talk. Regressed much? The hell? I was ready to smack him after fifteen minutes. I do like Arthur when he's being a prat, but it was laid on a bit thick. I mean, mostly I'm fine with it, because it was pretty funny in parts, and it was obviously there for a reason. I think it was a mixture of first episode re-introduction (reminding us that Arthur still has a ways to go), playing it up for laughs, and making Sigan's speech at the end a little more effective and/or tempting for Merlin. Because damn if I didn't want Merlin to join Sigan for a split second; I was "yeah, you know what, Arthur's a dick!" (Using him as a footstool??)
+ I also think the exaggerated prattishness made Merlin's scene with Gaius (lovely scene, btw) a little more effective, and I wonder if the whole 'destiny is hard because Arthur stands on my back' thing isn't going to be a theme for the season. But "I just want Arthur to trust me, and see me for who I really am, and everything I do is for him and he just thinks I'm an idiot?" HOYAY, MERLIN. HOYAY. <3333 *hugs you*
+ Mackenzie Crook was hilarious, both as Cedric and as Sigan.
+ I'm hoping Morgana gets more to do than wake up from nightmares and be upset, though again, this is a re-introduction episode, I think, so I think that'll change. She was so lovely and sad and I could seriously throttle Gaius. I know it's likely going to come to a head at some point, and I can't wait. UGH. And it seems to be causing some kind of angst for Gwen and Morgana, if Morgana's starting to feel like a burden to Gwen (apart from the fact that Gwen waits on her, obviously). I was kind of whining at the screen. GWEN LOVES YOU, MORGANA. PLS HUG AGAIN.
+ AWESOME GWEN IS AWESOME. Frankly, she needed more to do as well, because her scenes were for Morgana and Arthur, but this did not dilute her awesomeness oh my god. Soothing Morgana; I felt for them both so much. And her face, she looked frightened and sort of helplessly worried and how hard must that be to watch someone you love go through that with no concept of how to help her? OH GIRLS. D: And she saved Arthur's smug arse -- twice. She dragged his big, armor-clad body out of the way, and then TACKLED HIM. GET IT, GIRL.
+ Which brings me to the Arthur/Gwen, which kind of made my heart glad, I'm not even going to lie. I didn't think it was over-the-top at all, and I completely forgive the cheesy pratfall for three reasons: 1) The whole show is cheesy, wtf 2) OH HELLO HI CLEAVAGE and 3) the scene afterward. Can Arthur be awkward and fumbly and ridiculously sexy about it in EVERY SHOW? And can Gwen be vaguely endeared but mostly unimpressed and actually slightly confused by it ALL THE TIME??? Because I love it when they're all awkward and trying to figure each other out, and the scene was really well-played.
Their faces! Arthur's all punch-drunk and "heyyy, you...exist, and you're kind of cool" and Gwen's all "Ooookay... thanks, I think, but I'm a bit busy with all the BLOODIED PEOPLE, so..." JUST WITH THEIR FACES. Angel and Bradley and their epic range of facial expressions FTW. And then he finally thanks her, and awww at the both of them.
+ Overall, I loved the ep. Needed more of the girls and Arthur needed a swift kick on the arse, but it was epic AND MY SHOW IS BACK. ♥♥

YES! Perfect summary. I cracked up so hard. I love confused Gwen.
And there's definitely a need for more women on this show.
