On BSG
I'm up to episode 2x16 of Battlestar Galactica and I have some random thoughts.
So there are some awesome things about the show. Like Laura Roslin, who I just want to give daily hugs to. And Starbuck, who's so fierce and so fucked-up and interesting. And Sharon/Boomer/whatever she is, whose storyline is probably my favorite. And the fact that I ship Adama/Roslin because they are ADORABLE. And then there's Gaius, who is hilarious if irritating, and his whole thing with Six which I haven't yet figured out but am still interested in. And there are so many strong women, and I love that.
I like the moral quandaries and how everyone's so deeply deeply flawed.
I like the word 'frak'.
It has a great soundtrack.
Then there's all these gorgeous people walking around. Helo, Lee, Anders, Six (omg Six), Sharon, Kara...
It's an entertaining show.
But I'm really confused by a lot of the plot. Season 2 especially makes little sense to me. It seems to be just this series of really depressing (and often triggering, to be honest) events with little tying them all together and little attention paid to them after they're over. With some lovely, but random, character moments throughout. And there's a lot of retconning and pulling details out of the ether to explain this plot hole or that.
The show can't decide whether it wants to rely on a main story arc or a story-of-the-week format. It forgets about the main arc for long stretches of time. And I get the impression that whoever is writing it is making it up as they go along.
I mean, one episode they're on Kobol, looking at the map to Earth, then we never hear about that again because there's a Cylon TV reporter filming them the next episode. One episode, Lee bangs hookers and Has A Dark Side is in still in love with a random blonde while Dee is with Billy, and the next Dee is with Lee and we don't see how it happened, not really. And to be honest, I don't even ship Kara/Lee at all, really, so it's not that -- I just wish I knew why this new relationship is happening and I don't think it's leading anywhere good. I have a bad feeling that it's going to lead to Dee being fridged, or something. And I will long for the days where she was just the sweet communications chick who talks to all the pilots and keeps them in contact with Galactica when they're out in the black, and who thinks her Commander walks on water.
But maybe I'll be surprised.
And what is with Lee being randomly suicidal for like two episodes? We ever going to address that again?
Also, I am upset about Billy. What was the point of killing him off? Are we just thinking of ways to make Laura even more miserable and lonely? :(
Also, also, how many Controversial Things are going to come up and then just hang in the air, and why are so many of them about women and babies? Because I prefer talking about the Cylons and whether or not they have every right to be pissed.
There are more nitpicky things I dislike, like Jamie's normally-sexy voice sounding very strange with an American accent. And like Ellen Tigh, who I most of the time want to send out of an airlock. Actually her husband annoys me too.
And this sounds like I hate the show, but I really don't -- I both love the show, and am confused by it. I thought it would be loads better writing-wise than SGA (that is, SGA before it broke my heart), and it IS better, but not a whole lot better. Most of its failings are made up for by the sheer volume of kick-ass female characters who have such grievous stories to tell.
IDK where I'm going with any of this. LOL.
