Hodgepodge of a post!

+ [personal profile] camelotremix has gone live this morning! MY GIFT IS AWESOME: First Up Against the Wall (the grease and diesel oil remix), it's Gwen/Morgana, modern AU, a remix of this little smutlet I wrote at a Fleet party called Grease-Stained? I'm kind of flailing that someone's made something so wonderful from it. The author's basically turned it into a scene from a longer fic; it has mechanic!Gwen, cute hot Gwen/Morgana-ness, mechanic!Gwen, a great supporting cast, mechanic!Gwen, touches on class issues, and also mechanic!Gwen. IT IS THE GREATEST.

I wrote one too obviously! But I can't say which one until sometime next week, I believe. (I imagine mine is super-easy to guess, for better or worse, but OH WELL. *g*) Hopefully my recipient is as happy with her gift as I am with mine. I have some vagueish ideas who might have written mine, but I'm not sure. Anyway, check it out; there are 31 fics, four of them Gwen/Morgana even!

+ There was some TV I was going to talk about! I'll be brief, and I'll go in order of my reactions, from 'BEST' to 'mixed' to 'what the actual fuck', shall I?

+ The Good Wife )

+ Glee )

+ Sons of Anarchy )

Been catching up on my reading, and [personal profile] glass_icarus has a really gorgeous and timely essay that was spurred by this post, in which writer Elizabeth Moon makes a hateful and ignorant argument about the civil responsibility of marginalized groups, specifically targeting Muslim Americans and immigrants who are going through hell right now. And who (whatthefuck) should never be called on their patriotism for speaking out against the system of freeflowing hatred that's permeating the discourse lately in this country, that is for real affecting policy and quality of life.

On The Politics of Possession

If I can just quote part of it:

You say that "the business of a citizen is the welfare of the nation," and in broad strokes (and insofar as my community is considered part of the nation) I agree that this is so. However, I also believe that the business of a nation is the welfare of its citizens, and that the latter takes precedence over the former. If I love my country, if I want to serve my country, and it does nothing to recognize me; if politicians and legislators and members of the judiciary continue to ignore and overlook the needs of my people, should I still grant the welfare of the nebulous "nation" sovereignty over my life? Should I expend all my efforts in support of the comfortable majority even as my minority community and those of my friends and family members continue to struggle against the injustices of their daily lived experiences? Is this a sustainable, an equitable relationship? I say no, it is not. I say that a patriotism that only demands and never asks, only takes and never offers, is at least as terrible a thing as a love-relationship that does the same. I say that you should look at what national institutions have previously done to us, at what the state is trying to do today, before you dare to judge us for prioritizing the welfare of our own communities. Will you tell me now that awareness of these- yes, American- histories "unfits" me for citizenship?

PREACH. Civil responsibility is a two-way street, patriotism does not mean settling for scraps or taking abuse, and there's nothing more patriotic than holding a nation and a system to its supposed ideals. I mean, seriously.

+ First, a vid rec! [livejournal.com profile] sweetestdrain's Make Something Good, gorgeous Gwen-centric vid in which she is awesome and there is Arthur/Gwen/Merlin OT3ness all over the place. The vidder highlights some of the parallels and differences between all of Gwen's relationships, really. And did I mention gorgeous?

+ [personal profile] sophieisgod has a bunch of Vividcon recs here that I'm working through too.

+ Moar vid recs! Take Me Home, a celebration of femslash.
All We Have, all about the ladies of Treme. Have I talked about Treme yet? I should talk about Treme at some point.

+ I'm still kind of sitting out of fic challenges right now, but [personal profile] camelotremix/[livejournal.com profile] camelotremix looks like a lot of fun and I'm tempted - I've never done a remix challenge before, though. I guess first I'd have to figure out whether I even have five Merls fics to submit. I guess I do. *g* Anyway, check it out! Signups (on DW/on LJ) are open until the 21st.

+ [personal profile] magnetic_pole has Neoliberal Holmes, or, Everything I Learned About Modern Life I Learned from Sherlock, and it is POWERFUL.

That's it for now. Hope everyone's having a good Wednesday/week/whatever!

+ Sigh. Not really getting comment notifications at all, so I'm really sorry for failing to reply to things. I've got to remember to manually check posts I've made/been in.

+ So Avatar opened and it SUCKS. (Not that I've seen it, but every. single. review I've read concurs that it's a total disaster on every level, even beyond the racism and sexism.) I wish the actors the best in their future endeavors but guys, I feel so perversely gleeful reading those reviews. And sad at the same time, because I knew there was fail, but I didn't realise how many cool characters were cut (Jun, Teo, Suki/the Kyoshi for example), and how little agency female characters were given compared to the series. How little agency ANY marginalized group was given compared to the series.

THAT SAID, M Night Shyamalan specifically is getting heavily scapegoated here and it's not right, for a lot of reasons. I don't like the guy or anything he chooses to be, but the responsibility for this film's fail hardly starts with him. It's reflective of a problem in Hollywood and society as a whole. [livejournal.com profile] glockgal has some excellent thoughts on this here. Glock, and racebending.com, have been utterly amazing through this whole thing. ♥

Anyway, next Friday [livejournal.com profile] bratkartoffel, [livejournal.com profile] cloverdew and I are watching series one all day. GOOD TIMES. And I made a picspam on tumblr to make myself feel better. So I'm good.

+ Changing tack, [livejournal.com profile] zahrawithaz has written some Doctor Who gender meta that I thought was pretty smart: On Sexualizing Amy Pond. Because it is both possible and preferable to unpack gender issues in media without tearing down the characters themselves.

+ I'm officially on staycation! Left work early today, and the holiday weekend should be gorgeous weather-wise, if a bit hot. Looking forward to getting out and enjoying it.

If any of you USians are traveling, I hope you have a safe trip!

+ Fridayfridayfridayfriday. FRIDAY. Looking forward to the weekend. It's been a weird week and I've been a bit cranky, but today I am good. Work's going well (not always a given), Plans to hang with [livejournal.com profile] cloverdew and [livejournal.com profile] the_rainbow_jen next weekend -- good times!

Random links and shiz:

+ 'notha Who post I've seen linked around, because there can never be too many Who posts: On disliking female characters, displays of compassion, standards and feminism by [livejournal.com profile] misscam. I like this one in particular because it manages not to talk down any of the other new Who companions. Apparently there's more than one way to be a strong female character say whaaaaaat.

+ Relatedly, comms I have found to replace [livejournal.com profile] doctorwho on my reading list: [livejournal.com profile] pond_life and [livejournal.com profile] doctoreleven. Sorted!

+ Merlin characters cartoon/chibi-ized by [livejournal.com profile] felix_aeternus. Beware of extreme cute. No, seriously. Still grinning.

+ Lastly, have a photo of Dustin Hoffman and Jason Bateman kissing at the Lakers game.

I KNOW.

How are you guys? Hope you've had a good week. ♥
heathershaped: (TVD: Bonnie Elena)
+ I've had a pretty uneventful, but good, week. Work-wise, I got myself over the limit of vacation hours that I can hold without using them, so I took of Tuesday, yesterday, half of Wednesday and half of today to use them up. And unless I take another week straight off (not really feasible at the moment given the projects I have going), I'm going to have six vacation hours to kill every two weeks until I get back under my limit. Which is ... nice, really. Kind of wish I had somewhere to go and some cash to go there with, but you know, it's good to have the time to take and get things done. Also, yesterday was GORGEOUS and I didn't spend a minute of it at work so yay for that.

+ ALSO I'm getting my tax money back ridiculously fast considering when I filed, which is ACES. It's not vacation money, but I at least have some change to jingle around, a little to save, buy some toys and clothes, and just breathe a little bit.

+ Alice in Wonderland this weekend, FINALLY.

+ Being a grown-up sucks but we have been over this.

Linky links. Most are Telephone-ish but:

+ rec: Kinda Busy by [livejournal.com profile] yeats. Lady Gaga/Beyonce, R, Telephone verse. Yes, it is a verse. YULETIDE YAY.

+ related rec: [personal profile] bossymarmalade's post about Feministe's failtastic article on Telephone. What is with the pedantic posts I've been seeing about this video on most feminist blogs? It's got some problems for sure, and might not be everyone's cuppa, but there's an undercurrent of resentment in feminist critiques especially, IDK. And in their haste to tear it down they're bringing fail in other areas. The Feministe article's particularly bad though.

+ related related rec: Heather Cassils, Gaga's prison-partner in Telephone, gives good interview.

+ UNrelated rec: Lass's Genderswapped Supernatural Dream recasting. Complete with teenyfic interspersed throughout. Man oh man.

Harbor, by [livejournal.com profile] kaydeefalls. It is beautifully edited and all about how Gwen loves everyone and everyone loves her and she is the heart of the show. Definition of an insta-rec, basically. ♥

+ JD Salingerand Howard Zinn are both dead this week. D: Two great minds.

[livejournal.com profile] maehrys has mp3s of two of Zinn's lectures that I would definitely recommend.

+ Switching gears entirely, the lovely [livejournal.com profile] miakun made a Farscape picspam in an attempt to show me how awesome it is. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED, I now really want to meet this Aeryn chick. ♥ Anyway, I am linking to said picspam because it is really quite pretty. :D

+ Chromatic casting! There's a good roundup here. It is the best of all the memes. I had fun with Lord of the Rings; now I'm thinking about Anansi Boys for [personal profile] brightfame. (Which obviously isn't a REcasting, but still.) Might get to that tonight, or probably in a day or so actually because I should try to sleep earlier. Or, you know, at all.

+ Speaking of which, I was up past 4am both last night and the night before. WHAT IS HAPPENING TO ME YOU GUYS. This is not good; I don't drink enough coffee to support this sort of thing. It's RL stress driving me to distraction, I know. What do you guys do when you can't sleep?

+ S2 volume 2 Merlin DVDs soon! Which means hires screencaps which means: COMPREHENSIVE PICSPAMS. Watch out, tumblr.

+ Kelly, Sirena, robinmarian: Tonight is the night, I promise!

+ Signal boost! [livejournal.com profile] zahrawithaz has a list of 50 books by queer authors of color, in honor of the opening of [livejournal.com profile] queerlit50 and the continued radness of [livejournal.com profile] 50books_poc. If anyone's attempting either challenge, that list has got it all. Zahra's journal is full of a variety of thought food, btw; you should look her up.

+ Speaking of thought food, something I read today: I actually don't care whether anyone is offended. What I care about his harm.

+ Bidding closes at [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti at noon EST tomorrow. My offer for fic is here; my offer for graphics is here.

+ [livejournal.com profile] cleolinda has an open letter to celebrities and fandom. Summary: fangirls, you're at a ten; I'm gonna need you to be at a four. (Lurking at their houses, really? Really?)

+ [livejournal.com profile] obsessive24's new BSG vid, "Wicked Game". A Dee vid! The only full-length Dee vid I've ever seen, anyway. It's fabulous.

+ Ryan Murphy, the creator of Glee? Is a jackass. (Glee spoilers at the link.) First of all, I like Puck/Rachel but just say no to fanservice. Second of all: "I thought people would find her to be far too irritating for him?" WHY IS THAT EXACTLY. Personally, I find being a cheating asshole, however lovable and male, slightly more "irritating" than being a little intense about one's career goals.

+ Massachusetts, what are you doinnnnnngggggggg

[livejournal.com profile] walkingshadow has produced the most perfect post for my current mood so I am pointing to it so that all may enjoy:

How To Tell If Your Pain is ~Manpain~

(in a tv/fannish context, obvs)

+ Also, yesterday out of curiosity and the fact I am firmly in procrastination-mode, I watched Misfits, that new ~Skins-meets-Heroes~ crossover thing on E4? (I was warned, and yet.) OMG WHOSE IDEA WAS THAT. WHO GREENLIGHTED THAT. WHO ACTUALLY THOUGHT THAT WOULD BE A GOOD IDEA. OH MY GOD. It may qualify as the single most offensive television program I have ever seen. I'm warning you now, don't touch it. Heed this warning as I failed to heed it. Others have described why better than I can.

Guess who wrote and created it, I notice? Howard Overman. The same Howard Overman who occasionally writes for Merlin. He's written good episodes of Merlin, I would add. idek.

+ Did I mention I'm in procrastination mode? Smutty Claus in a week, Camelot Solstice the week after that. Someone please, kick me in the ass. No, seriously.

+ I hope you're all having a great day. ♥

obligatory holiday card post pointage. I'll probably get on that this weekend. If I've missed your post, lemme know.
heathershaped: (BSG: Sharon)
+ Thanks to everyone who left me birthday wishes yesterday! Tweets, PMs, emails, v-gifts, facebook wall thingies, LJ posts and comments - I really rather love you guys. ♥♥♥♥ And I had a great day, btw. :D

+ [livejournal.com profile] miakun wrote me happy Merls fic what has Gwen/Morgana and OT4 at the same time! Go looky!

+ Yuletide signups! I'm excited but a little freaked out by them. I have the fandoms I nominated, but there are so many more to choose from and I don't know where to start! I'm going to think on it a bit more before I sign up for reals.

+ That's all for today. I have to give a presentation tomorrow at work, but I only have half a day to work on it because we all have to go to this award ceremony/holiday party/contract renewal celebration thing. Free food and the possibility of heading home early, always good.

+ Has anyone tried the Write or Die desktop app? Worth the ten bucks? I like the regular version.

+ I want to share this vid, most recently picked up at [personal profile] deepad's journal.

Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie giving a talk about 'The Danger of a Single Story'

On reading, writing, and how the stories we're exposed to can shape our perspectives. It's eighteen minutes long, but more than worth a listen.

The problem with the single story is this: it robs people of dignity. It makes our recognition of our equal humanity difficult. It emphasizes how we are different, rather than how we are similar.

Word. I would quote the whole talk back at you if I could.
heathershaped: (Merlin: Arthur/Gwen/Merlin)
+ I may have created a Katie/Angel/Morgana/Gwen tumblr, for picspamming and general sharing of prettified pics, quotes, videos, gifs, and whatever else concerning the girls. If you're on tumblr, follow it! With Flowers. :D

+ Fest season is in high gear and I am sitting on my hands. I definitely don't need to be signing up for Valensmut, Wizard Love, 3 Ships (man, 3 Ships is tempting) etc. when I have yet to finish Smutty_Claus or camelotsolstice and am definitely doing Yuletide. Also, the art that's being used in the banners for [livejournal.com profile] hp_nextgen_fest makes me want to sign up for it, it's so pretty. *cuddles Rose and Albus and Lily and Scorpius* But that is a ridiculous reason to sign up for an exchange if ever there was one, so I'm not, you know, going to. But you all should, if you're inclined, they look like much fun even if I don't think the stress would be good for me.

+ [livejournal.com profile] merlin_femslash. Need I say more? Also, [livejournal.com profile] merlin_cliche. Because magic unicorns made them do it, and it was good.

+ Art rec: Arthur/Gwen/Merlin film-noir THEY ARE SO HOT I CAN'T TAKE IT. And it's completely safe for work. The accompanying kinkmeme ficlet? Definitely not for the kids.

+ Fic rec: I've been reading a lot of lovely things lately, which reminds me how much I fail at my recs-listing, but here's one real quick: Please (NC-17) by [livejournal.com profile] blackmamba_esq. Kinky Arthur/Gwen. Dom!Gwen hits buttons I didn't even know I had.

+ I've been reading Glee fic. Kurt/Puck and Quinn/Rachel. Oh yeah. (Thanks, Inell.)

+ Apparently Christian Bale had TOM CRUISE in mind when getting into Patrick Bateman's character for American Psycho. brb loling forever.

+ I am having a good day at work. Stuff is working. :D Hope everyone is doing well - hugs to everyone who needs them. ♥

I always feel like when I make a ranty post, I should make up for it if only to cleanse my own palate, so, a linkspam:

+ ETA: Mirroring my last post, Celebrities NOT supporting Polanski.

+ [livejournal.com profile] irrel drew Arthur, Gwen and Merlin of prettiness, and at the bottom of the post is a sketch of Morgana braiding Gwen's hair and it's making me happier than happy.

+ [livejournal.com profile] fiiishy's writing Merlin fic now, which also makes me happy, and she wrote what Morgana was up to in The Once And Future HBIC. (the last episode, which presumably I will stop re-watching at some point.) Hi personal canon! Go tell her not to be nervous.

+ Sesame Street does "Mad Men." Hee.

+ I caught up on Glee, and while I want less Will and his drama, I must have watched Kurt (and the football team) do the Single Ladies dance 8 times in a row. Each. It took me like two hours to watch that episode.

+ Tumblr picspams. I'm especially in love with Made of Gold, all Bradley/Angel/Arthur/Gwen all the time. fuckyeahmerlin, colinmorgan and bradley-james are also made of awesome. I'm tempted to start an Angel/Katie/Gwen/Morgana tumblr called ... idk, flowersftw or something. SEE IF I DON'T.
heathershaped: (Merlin: OT4)
+ Actually, I can't, but you can thank [personal profile] such_heights for putting the song in my head. She did a Merlin vid yesterday that is epicness, go looky.

+ Mom's home from the hospital! It's mostly good, she feels okay and is in good spirits, but she's going to need to start seeing a cardiologist regularly. :/

+ I have so much to do. Went shopping earlier, which took up some time and I spent too much money, but I do have new shoes. Now I have to do some serious cleaning because this week has been crazy and I haven't had time, and tomorrow morning I'm going down to help straighten up Mom's house; she's having her physical therapist come by and wants things to be neat. And then [livejournal.com profile] inell will be driving up (Yay!) and then we're meeting [livejournal.com profile] seakisst and [livejournal.com profile] bratkartoffel for a movie or something else that's fun. (Yay!)

+ MERLIN IN TWO DAYS. You have NO IDEA (okay so you may have some idea) HOW EXCITED I AM ABOUT THE NEW SEASON. All signs point to more of the girls, awesome new plots, plenty of slashy funtimes, MORE OF THE GIRLS, and basically my cracky show will be back in my life.

I AM EXCITE

Would do some sort of spam to celebrate but it will prove FAR too diverting and others have already done epic picspams from the latest trailer - but here's the trailer anyway for those who haven't seen it yet or for those who want to see it again not that I've seen it fifteen times or anything:

two minutes of sheer gorgeousness and a couple of gifs under the cut )

So, Caster Semenya's been placed on suicide watch.

She's eighteen fucking years old. I certainly hope the press and the people currently chewing her up and spitting her out as if the fact that she's not like them means she's there for their consumption, to satisfy their curiosity and damn her feelings, are pleased with themselves.

In light of that, would just like to point to [livejournal.com profile] karnythia's post on Race, Gender and the Oppressive Public Gaze.
heathershaped: (Mad Men: Joan)
+ I couldn't watch True Blood last night; will catch up when I get home. Hopefully I can keep avoiding spoilers.

+ I did catch Mad Men, which was the best episode yet, though some parts were ...jarring to stay the least. (What was WRONG with people back then? O_o) Anyway, Peggy and Joan continue to own my soul and I continue to watch the show with a mixture of squee and laughter and sadness and irritation and near-palpable tenseness.

+ The party post at camelot_fleet is still going and there are 600 comments or something. There's also a lot of commentfic and it's all fantastic. Gwen/Morgana and Gwen/Merlin and Morgana/Merlin and Uther/Dragon and Uther/Gaius and Arthur/Merlin/Morgana and Hunith/Arthur and Gwen/Nimueh and OT4 and Arthur/Gwen and and and I can't even remember. I'll re-post mine later, methinks.

+ I am recommending it all, but I have to single out this Gwen art, by [livejournal.com profile] yue_ix -- it's modern AU and she is a mechanic and it is BEAUTIFUL because her coveralls are down and she has freckles and a wrench and a tool belt and there's her HAIR and her top and the colors and she's wiping sweat off her brow and good lord it is the most gorgeous thing I've ever seen. And I should link to it, probably.

+ The new tagline for Merlin s2 is "You can't escape destiny." Why does that scare me? :P

+ ETA: Random 'WHOA' -- Disney is buying Marvel? What is this?

+ Deadline for [livejournal.com profile] hermionebigbang is next Sunday! We're excitedly waiting for the rest of the fics and art and we kind of have a lot of work to do. But we'll get it done and it'll be great. Posting for that starts on 19 September.

+ Hope everyone's getting their weeks off to a good start. After work, I've got coursework to get done for tomorrow, and betaing to do, and I should probably TRY to finish my reel_merlin.
heathershaped: (Being Human: Annie)
Go read [livejournal.com profile] sarahtales' Ladies, Please (Carry On Being Awesome). An interesting look at how many of us see women in fiction, how many of us might want to try seeing women in fiction. How would we perceive Harry Potter if he were Harriet instead? Why do we often hold women to different standards?

Money quote:

"The femme fatales, the ninja ladies, the shy girls, the chatterboxes, the ones several guys wanted, the ones none of the guys wanted, the heroines, the sassy sidekicks, the girl the hero fell in love with in one episode we never saw again, the girl who wanted a guy she didn't get, the girl who was with a ton of different guys, the girl who was devoted to her job, the girl who was into other ladies, the murder victim, the tomboy, the feisty redhead, the dumb blonde. There was never anything wrong with any of them.

It's worth it to recognise that we're all okay. We were always okay."

Speaking of awesome, take a look at Gwen in series 2 of Merlin. Just freaking look at her. My excitement for the new season has officially reached fever pitch, though I need more Morgana promos too! Preferably one of her and Gwen together, being lovely. *nod*

(and oh, oh, series 2 news. Gwen-ness. Arthurness. Cracked-out plots. The cast playing hide-and-seek in the courtyard. I. I can't even. I just. )
heathershaped: (Trek: Uhura)
Bear with me, ya'll. Another meta rec, if you please:

[livejournal.com profile] liviapenn on Uhura, and how if you're going to write her off as unessential to the plot, you have to do the same thing to McCoy because they have nearly the exact same role when it comes to Spock and Kirk, respectively.

Basically, probably my favorite meta on this whole thing. It's not Bones-bashing either, at all; it's sense-making and perspective-giving. He kind of gets worse treatment in the film than Uhura compared to their roles in TOS, but they both contribute to the group dynamic in almost the same way, except that Uhura got to do something that started the plot rolling at least. Read the whole thing if you care about any of this, but the money line: I have not seen a single comment-- not ONE-- complaining "aw, why was Bones such a loser in this, we didn't get to see his SKILLS, he never got to do anything but emotionally support Kirk." When there actually would be serious grounds for complaint there. He didn't get to perform surgery or figure out some cool cure for a disease or anything like that. He was "reduced" to being "just" Kirk's best friend. (Please note the extremely ironic "".)

(But! Bones is love, obviously, so instead of writing anyone off, dudes, just accept that they are the OT4 of ST2009. TRUFAX. ♥♥♥ I want OT4 fic now.)
heathershaped: (Trek: Uhura/Spock favouritism)
ST Reboot people: Do you understand how awesome Cadet Gaila is? I feel strongly about this. I mean, Uhura is my one true love, obviously, but we can talk about her later. I want to pimp out the green redheaded awesomeness that is Gaila for a second. I mean. She's from Orion, and she's in Starfleet; this alone is a big effing deal. Because yeah, she gets laid a lot, and she is clearly competent and knows her shit or she wouldn't be there. She's like Kirk, but green and a girl. :P There should be no doubling of standards in her case. She's intelligent and cool and I choose to think she was pretty good friends with Uhura, not just her roommate.

Orion women are freaking sex slaves and objects for the most part, in old school canon, and the writers have speculated that Gaila was in slavery like the others, but escaped. There is so much fic potential here and I would love to know more about her. And of course, as with Uhura, she is being hated upon in some sections of the blogosphere. But! There are people writing her. She and Uhura, two of the few women in the film, are being written about, wtf I love this fandom. I need to share.

Pimpage:

[livejournal.com profile] taraljc is hosting IT'S NOT EASY BEING GREEN: THE DOOD, GAILA IS AWESOME COMMENTFIC EXTRAVAGANZA on her LJ. In it, you will find fic recs, comment fic, and the most awesome macro to ever awesome. Go read and play! It cannot survive without us.

[livejournal.com profile] seriousfic has probably the best Gaila I've read yet, and has written Academic Discourse in which there is character study with Gaila at the Academy with Uhura and Kirk and awesome. She also wrote Going Down, most-movie Gaila/Kirk.

[livejournal.com profile] taraljc wrote House Rules, Uhura and Gaila gen that I would draw hearts around if I could.

[livejournal.com profile] yahtzee63 wrote Awkward, more Kirk and Gaila post-movie.

Now. With that said, I think I'm going to see if I can't put Gaila and Uhura into some kind of fic for posting. XP
