Gonna do a quick friday five meme I spotted on [livejournal.com profile] dreamon_dreamer's journal!

lasts.

1. What was the last book you read, and what is your opinion of it?
A Feast for Crows by George R R Martin. It's probably my favorite of the series so far, tied with A Storm of Swords. My issue with the ASOIAF books is that it often takes me a ridiculously long time to get through chapters for characters that don't interest me as much or for whom Martin's prose is especially rambly, because for all that I love the characters, the actual reading experience is...kind of a chore for me. AFFC has the highest percentage of POV chapters that don't bore me, so it's kind of my favorite by default. Also HOUSE MARTELL FOREVER <3

Around the same time, or close enough that I'm not sure which was first, I finished volume 1 of the Fullmetal Alchemist manga. Delightful.

2. What was the last movie you saw, and what is your opinion of it?
Attack the Block. Legit one of my favorite movies of the year! Funny, charming, touching, really great performances, with some sharp social commentary that I wasn't expecting. Nice soundtrack, too. Definitely one of the best genre films I've seen in quite a while. Also I want the kid who played Moses to be in all the things; everyone was adorable though.

3. What was the last TV show you saw, and what is your opinion of it?
The last episode of anything that I watched was episode 4x10 of The Wire, "Misgivings". I've seen it twice already so it's part of my rewatch, but my opinion is the same as my opinion for all of season four, which is CRYING FOREVER.

In terms of current stuff, this week I watched the most recent episodes of Sons of Anarchy (not bad), True Blood (I've officially and permanently broken up with that show), and Lost Girl (delightfulll). Giving the new season of Vampire Diaries a miss for now. When Bonnie turns back up, I'll marathon what I missed. /iregretnothing.gif

4. What was the last album you bought / downloaded, and what is your opinion of it?
Soundtracks for Attack the Block. Definitely recommended if you've seen it. I also downloaded the new St Vincent album around the same time but I haven't listened to it yet. I'm not that well-versed in St Vincent's other stuff, I just love her face and I've heard good things about this album.

5. What was the last meal you cooked, and how did it turn out?
I actually cooked for the first time in a few weeks on Wednesday, but it wasn't anything special. It was just this chicken pasta salad thingy but it was really tasty and colorful and had veggies. Balanced meals, y'all. I'm such a fucking adult.

Saw DH pt 2, cried all over myself, have thoughts.

i'll go with you )
heathershaped: (Merlin: Arthur/Gwen/Merlin)
I have watched this three times.

No regrets.

I haven't said anything about X-Men: First Class really -- I wasn't intending to see it but the friend I was with didn't want to see Super 8, so. As a longtime X-Men fan it was really exciting (seriously, Charles/Erik's one of my o.g. OTPs and [personal profile] selenak reviews some of the cool things about it). But it was also frustrating, enough for me not to want to recommend this movie, because it should've been the best film in the franchise but is easily the WORST when it comes to how the women and PoCs fared. Not to mention the erasure of Mystique's queerness, much as I enjoyed her arc.

Particularly disappointing for me because the X-Men franchise prides itself on being an allegory for oppressed groups in the real world, and I think that's part of what draws so many fans to it. Which is problematic enough, but to try to do that and then proceed to erase, exploit, and marginalize the actual minorities in the film ... gives me a headache. (here's a fantastic roundup of the things that bugged me most, and as always, rawles' commentary is the greatest.)

I'm also sick of love stories that don't get to be actual love stories--and if Charles and Erik aren't that, then I don't know what is. Beautifully rendered and acted but frustrating.

Also: McAvoy can make me like Charles even at his most arrogant and oblivious points in the film, so that was cool. Fassbender's face creeps me out generally (too. many. teeth.), but not as Magneto, so that was fine.

MAN, YOU GUYS. I feel like I miss y'all all the time because I go through these periods without posting/commenting. The thing is, I'm in a phase where I have not been feeling like engaging with fandom lately beyond talking about stuff that barely anyone else is watching. :P I've also been spending a lot of time on tumblr. But neither of these things are valid reasons not to engage with my f-list! So I'm trying to get better at commenting and answering comments and stuffs. Basically I don't want to only show up around here when I get mad about something, hee. So anyway, some things:

+ Parks and Recreation is back and everything is beautiful and nothing hurts. I love everyone in that bar.
+ I watched Sanctuary over the holidays -- it's actually pretty good! The first season was hard for me to get into, but it found its stride in season 2.
+ Side-eyeing Chris Nolan for his choices re: The Dark Knight Rises. Love Tom Hardy, but he should not be playing Bane. Bane is not white. Love Anne Hathaway, but I wouldn't have thought of her for Selina Kyle, although that one's more of a wait-and-see for me.
+ Being Human is back on Sunday. BEING HUMAN IS BACK ON SUNDAY. I haven't watched the US version because I'm just not sure I can take the secondhand embarrassment at this stage, however, I DID watch the US Skins premiere. It's kind of terrible but I'll be honest, I'm probably going to keep watching because I'm interested in what they'll do with Tea.
+ I just finished reading the Chaos Walking trilogy by Patrick Ness. I couldn't help comparing it to The Hunger Games just because even though it doesn't have the same derivative Battle Royale ripoff premise, it does have some parallels about war and resistance and politics and stuff, and is also a YA post-apoc (sort of) trilogy of some notoriety. Except for me, Chaos Walking is SO MUCH BETTER. Mostly because Ness is a better storyteller than Collins IMO, and the characterizations were stronger, the plot felt much more cohesive. It's intense and heartbreaking and SOUL-DESTROYING but it's a good, quick read and I'd recommend it if you like YA stuff. Also: OTP of OTPs, feelings explosion, etc. Without getting all spoilery.
+ I just started reading Game of Thrones, because I'm more and more excited about HBO's adaptation of it that's coming in April. The trailers just look so amazing (Lena! Bean!), even though pseudo-European fantasy worlds are starting to bug me on principle. Anyway, I'm not far into the book yet, but it's good so far.

Brief assorted linkspam!
+ [personal profile] glass_icarus' Potluck blogging festival, for multicultural and intersectional discussions and writings about food.
+ According to my f-list I should read Pairing: Pendragon/Merlin. Everyone from every fandom is reccing this fic, haha. OKAY OKAY I WILL
+ Camelot Fleet Finishathon. Looks so amazing this year.
+ Really, really interesting and important discussion on "piracy" (specifically e-books for the most part), and the inherent privilege that goes along with defending Western Imperialist notions of intellectual property.

Finally, a meme, which you should all do, because I often feel like talking but don't know what to talk about! So, ask me anything you want to know!

Ask me a fandom-related question in the comments. This can be fandom specific, general, or about fandom/lj stuff/fic writing/etc. in general. Questions can be as wacky as you want. Ask me about tv shows, characters, fanfic in general, fandom issues/meta. Whatever you want.
heathershaped: (hp: maybe we should just stay here)
+ My holiday was pretty great. Food and family and wine and meeting, then awkwardly holding, my 20-day-old niece. SO TINY AND SQUIRMY OMG. I love babies, especially if they're related to me, but I don't know if I have vast stores of maternal instinct, lol.

She's the cutest though. ♥ Hope everyone had a good holiday. Despite being on the East Coast the brunt of yesterday's storm missed me, but I hope everyone who got hit is home safe and warm or traveling safely. <3

+ I watched the DW Christmas special, which was spoilers )

+ Two movies I watched over the holidays: True Grit and Black Swan. Brief thoughts:

Black Swan spoilers )

True Grit spoilers )

+ Everyone's making end-of-year lists! I never have before, but if I find the time I kind of want to put together a 2010 music post of some sort. Or perhaps a post about the TV I loved. There was a lot of TV. More on this later.

+ And oh man, sometime soon I need to talk to you guys about kdramas. Tumblr has made me start watching You're Beautiful and Secret Garden and hommmmg. *____*
heathershaped: (HP: Harry)
I honestly don't even know if this post will make any more sense than it would have if I'd made it immediately after watching. At 3am Friday morning. BUT WHATEVER. I will start typing and we'll see.

eta: holy crap this is an embarrassing amount of rambling and flail.

spoilers know they'll never love this way again so they'll keep holding on till all the good is gone )

SPOILER ALERT

IT WAS AWESOME

Splitting it in two was a GOOD call and I kind of want to send Steve Kloves flowers and I have SO MANY FEELINGS

SO MANY

I won't be home for much of Friday or Saturday so I probably won't make my review post until Sunday (when I'll probably see it again), but in the meantime I am so happy with it!

I did in fact cry all over myself. Twice, maybe two and a half times tbh.

+ Thank you so much to whomever did this! Seriously. The anonymous love meme is great and you should all nom people and check out the index because there's tons of names to love on.

Now, while I'm here, some stuff:

- [livejournal.com profile] mrinalinee on why Outsourced is actually the worst. WORRRRRST.

- Mostly inspired by you guys, I'm thinking of doing a thirty day female characters picspam meme on here and tumblr. Can I actually stick to it and finish it? WE SHALL SEE.

- speaking of female characters, there are very few to speak of in The Social Network. That is why I don't really care about it, Sorkin or no Sorkin. Not because it's the "Facebook Movie" (though I do hate Facebook), not because I am being a Cool Kid who's ~above it all~, but because I'm broke and don't have the extra money to spend on a narrative about affluent white boys and their lives, one that is supposed to ~define my generation~ as a Y-er, but in which I see no evidence of anything relating to my actual experiences. Maybe later, I will rent it. *kanye shrug*

- that last point was for you, Tumblr.

- I do love the soundtrack, though.

- [community profile] undercovers! I love that show you guys; it reminds me of shows like Leverage in terms of adorableness. I watch ach week completely blown away by Gugu Mbatha-Raw's face. If it gets cancelled I shall never recover.

- I am also watching Nikita. Which is actually not terrible, if you ignore the improbable plot and Shane West, whom I can't take seriously. And it's a shame because he really really wants me to take him seriously, you can tell by his Serious Face. [personal profile] glass_icarus likes to call his permanent expression that of a grumpy teddy bear, and I think that fits. HOWEVER, Nikita is great, Alex is great, and I'm two eps behind but looking forward to catching up.

- I was going to review TVD, but it wasn't my favorite episode in a lot of ways, and also I am lazy.

- I'm in a weird mood. kind of grumpy, but very hyper as I've had sugar. That might explain this mess of a post.

- ...that's about it. Happy Monday errbody. ♥ How you doin', say hey if you want!

Inception! I know I've been hyping this movie a lot. Not saying it was perfect, but I loved it and can't find any dealbreaking faults. It was original, extremely well put together, visually stunning, and plain COOL to watch.

Quick points, not really spoilery but cut just in case )

more spoilery tldr review under the cut )

Have you seen it? What'd you guys think?
heathershaped: (Merlin: down with the twirl)
I have been rewatching Avatar: The Last Airbender off and on today between cleaning and dog-washing and whatever. Not great time management, but a decent life choice anyway. But it reinforces my heartbreak over That Movie I Would Actually Pay People To Not See.

I've also, just now, been spending too much time grinning over:

FEMINIST HULK on Twitter ("HULK PONDER CAPITALISM’S COMPLICITY IN PATRIARCHY. HULK SMASH FOR FREE.")

and What the eff should I make for dinner dot com.

Which is really all I wished to share with y'all today.

Oh, also, I watched The Losers and ... it was a little dull. Which was weird given all the explosions. Good part? Zoe Saldana causing some of those explosions. I probably should have seen it before Iron Man 2, is the problem.

I saw Alice! Mostly it was wonderful. I saw it in 3D, which was pretty cool. The last thing I saw in 3D was Coraline, and it wasn't nearly as ... 3D (?) As Alice was, by which I guess I mean it seemed like more things were jumping out at me. Every scene had lots and lots of depth. Although some of it verged on irritating in the beginning, before I was used to it. I don't recommend it if you get vertigo easily.

some thoughts )

Unrelatedly, I need to decide whether I want to keep watching the health care debates or distract myself until around 7pm.
heathershaped: (JGL: with Zooey)
Saw 500 Days of Summer today.

SEE IT. Definitely right next to Star Trek as one of the best things I've watched all year. And my expectations were high, as some of you will know. *g*

It made me laugh (a lot) and, surprisingly, tear up a bit, and bits of it were so much like a relationship I've had that it was kind of uncanny -- but I think most people who've been in a thing that didn't work out would see something in the film that they recognise.

Also, JGL is. Just. IDEK. <333 I couldn't get enough of his funny hair and dimples and skinny suits and ties and VESTS and obnoxiously large headphones and surprisingly sinewy forearms. And there was singing and dancing. And that ending. SIGH.

A+ movie, would see again, is what I'm trying to say.

FYT, here's 57 seconds of drunk!Joe singing The Pixies.
heathershaped: (HP: Harry mom's a horcrux)
I saw it. I... kinda loved it. :D I think my expectations were pretty low because HBP is my least favorite of the books to begin with, but it was also pretty legitimately well done as far as HP films go.

ANYWAY.

My spoilerific rambling about the movie under the cut )
heathershaped: (HP: Harry: nobody fucks with)
+ Okay, FINE. I'm seeing HBP tonight. I can't wait till the weekend and miss all your squee/rant/lulz posts. :P I've bookmarked all your reviews and will add my two cents to them later. And probably tonight, you will get a rambly, capslocky and very-likely biased review from me, such as I provided after OotP. :D

*bounces around*

+ Also, am having serious Azkatraz envy at this time. STOP ALL YOUR SQUEEING. D: D: D: D: (kidding. XD) I hope all of you (and there are SO many of you) who are going have lots of fun! And travel safe! ♥ ♥ ♥

+ I'm debating whether to listen to today's Sotomayor confirmation hearings. Yesterday's weren't exactly good for my blood pressure, and if I hear the words 'wise Latina' one more time I may break something. Preferably Lindsay Graham. If any of you are reading my Twitter, you're probably hoping I don't listen today. >__>

eta: Oh goodie, they're grilling her about her speeches AGAIN. That's okay, the law is boring anyway. ;_;

+ Hugs to everyone who needs them, and I hope you all have a great day. ♥
heathershaped: (Merlin: Morgana/Katie smile)
+ Happy Birthday [personal profile] gnimaerd! Hope you've had a fantastic day. It's fun being f-listies with you and squeeing over Merlin and our respective crushes therein. XD And you got me writing RPF, which is no mean feat. *g* Cheers for being such a cool person, seriously. ♥

+ I've got a rental car while mine is in the shop. It's nice, but I've never had a rental car before, and I'm freaking paranoid about scratching it or something.

+ Whilst out driving and being paranoid today, I listened to my new copy of the HBP score. It's gorgeous in parts; I think I almost like it better than the PoA score which is my favorite of the lot. Anyway I am EXTREMELY excited for the film, which I never thought I'd say since HBP was my least favorite of the books. Oh, HP, my first true fannish love. ♥ I shall never really leave you.

+ Finished reading Kushiel's Dart (first in the Kushiel's Legacy books) by Jacqueline Carey. Highly recommended, by the way. It's definitely not without its problems but it's also pretty freaking EPIC. I love the main character and her more than worthy antagonist; I love the richly detailed universe and all the political intrigue throughout. Moving on to the next installment immediately, kthnx. I haven't read something so immersive in a while.

+ Okay, I'm off. Bingley needs a bath, and I have five-times fic to write, and other stuffs to do. ♥
heathershaped: (Merlin: Gwen/Angel smile)
+ EEEEEEE. Bill Nighy cast in Deathly Hallows! *LOVES Bill Nighy* They're not saying who he's playing, though. Who do we think, Scrimgeour? Gregorovitch? Hmmm.

+ There is a femslash porn battle happening, people. :D:D:D Leave prompts; the more the merrier!

+ I signed up to write an essay on Teyla Emmagan for [livejournal.com profile] idol_reflection (it's like ship_manifesto, only with individual characters rather than pairings). *headdesk* I couldn't not. Someone (you know who you are *g*) nabbed Gwen before I could. Not that I won't love rambling about Teyla. <333 BTW, no one's done essays for any SGA characters except for John. And there are NO Merlin characters claimed except for Gwen just now, which is a shame. HP is pretty well-represented but there could always be more. :D If you have a favorite character in any fandom, make a claim and spread the love.

+ Finally, [livejournal.com profile] merlin_rarepair is having a Five Times challenge.

Here is where f-list participation is encouraged. Anyone want to leave me a prompt? Merlin/Gwen, Morgana/Gwen, Arthur/Gwen, Arthur/Morgana, Merlin/Morgana, OT4? Five Times/Things/Whatever. Lay it on me.

+ At some point I will talk about real life again.

Being a grown-up still sucks, news at 11.
heathershaped: (Buffy stakes Edward FTW)
So, after signing up for Twilight in addition to Y Tu Mama at [livejournal.com profile] reel_merlin, I realised a flaw in my plan.

I would have to actually watch the Twilight movie all the way through.

I read the book ages ago and found it unintentionally HILARIOUS, at best, and a whole lot of other things at worst. So obviously I dragged my feet watching the movie because none of the stars make me drool enough to sit through anything they do. When I finally did see it, I couldn't make it past the scene with Edward nearly throwing up as Bella walks into the room. Just LOL.

Anyway. Yesterday I went ahead and watched it after re-watching my other reel_merlin film.

It's ... actually not as bad as the book, for a couple reasons. There's much less of Bella's banal internal dialogue, so in turn that makes her seem much less vapid and less of a jerk to, oh, everyone except Edward. She also stands up for herself a little bit more in the beginning which is not saying much because she's completely useless in the books. There was no fainting that I remember, and there was less tripping and being ~*~endearingly klutzy~*~ every two minutes. I think she only tripped twice in the film. Heh.

So there was that.

Edward was gross as always (sorry fans, he's just not for me). His ~*~sparkles~*~ looked like blond fur and he was obsessive and mood-swingy. (By the by, Morgana's going to have FANGS, damn it.)

I did like Alice. She was adorable even though she had like two lines. And I liked Charlie. Not surprising because they were the only two people I didn't hate in the book. Would definitely hit Charlie before I'd hit Edward. The movie's also really pretty, scenery-wise, even with the blue filter they used for the whole thing.

The acting was all right in the beginning, but once they finally introduced the plot and ~*~tension~*~ it started to get pretty atrocious.

I am outlining both fics - I don't think this one's going to take place around a high school (seriously, WHY does Edward go to high school? I refuse to even try to make that make sense), nor will there be any literal sparkling. I just... I've got to draw the line somewhere. So we'll see how it goes.
