FANDOM MARCH MADNESS. TWO WEEKS OF INSANITY. SILLINESS. OF PEOPLE BEING WRONG ON THE INTERNET.

I plan to stan/campaign for Gwen, Astrid (is Fringe getting a bracket idek), and Bonnie at first, mostly because I do not suspect any of them will make it past the prelims, so this'll be my only shot. Also you can generally expect to see me stanning the ladies and marginalized chars throughout 'cos that's how I roll.

Also, hellooo everybody. <3 Happy March! I'm gonna try to be around more!

+ TV:

- Excited about Game of Thrones. I'm 2/3 of the way through the first book now.
- Starz' Camelot: Tried it! loooooool... no. I'm sorry! I am sorry. But haha, no. ~*~say my name~*~~~~
- Being Human: currently three episodes behind. Not really in a rush to catch up.
- Vampire Diaries: Is on notice.
- Merlin: Filming in two weeks! I miss the kids, I really do. ♥

+ The Oscars were super-predictable. But David Fincher didn't win! *\o/* And James Franco is probably still high.

+ For the most part I missed the anon meme debate in Merlin fandom. Probably a good thing I missed it, from what I've been reading, but for the record you can count me in the "the meme is overwhelmingly and inexcusably gross, forever and ever amen" camp. I feel like once it becomes necessary to disclaim that "all you have to do is skim past the racism/sexism/personal attacks/appearance wank/bullying and it's an AWESOME PLACE", then it might be gross! I'm just saying, I'm just saying.

+ I did my taxes last week, and all looks good. I might have some extra cash to splurge on something. Think it might be an iPad. Tomorrow is the iPad 2 presentation so we'll see how many major changes there are. I always freak out about big purchases, particularly when they're things I don't... well, actually need. (Like an irl PADD for example.)

+ This post has no point whatsoever. But I got a lot of sleep last night, I actually have energy. Love you guys, back to work. ♥

Right so, David Fincher. And how much of an asshole he is:

“I love Max Minghella. He came to us, uh, he obviously came to read for another part, and we had read enormous— probably a hundred— Indian actors who came in to read for Divya, and I saw footage of the actual Divya Narendra, who I’ve met now and he’s kind of like Warren Beatty. There’s nothing, aside from being incredibly tan, there’s almost nothing that seems particularly ethnic about him…. and we couldn’t find somebody who had that sort of smoothness. I looked, I looked, I looked. We went to London, we went to, I think, Paris, we went to Montreal. We cast from everywhere. And finally in the end I just felt that Max had the most, kind of… [trails off]. I just wanted to make sure that Divya was an equal. He was the most important third wheel in this triumvirate.”

That's from the DVD commentary for The Social Network. Fincher's talking about the fact he didn't cast an Indian actor for the RL person called Divya Narendra who is the American-born son of two doctors from India.

Do I even need to--

Divya Narendra is kind of like Warren Beatty who is white which means ...what, it's totally kewl not to bother casting an Indian actor because he doesn't seem to fit Mr. Fincher's idea of Indian dudes despite the fact that he is in fact Indian? And aside from minor details like his dark skin and visibly Indian features he doesn't seem "ethnic" to Mr. Fincher? And he couldn't find someone who had that "smoothness" that ...what, only white actors can bring to a role? And he wanted to make sure Divya was an "equal" because... what, he couldn't be unless he was white? WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU SAYING, MR. FINCHER. Especially considering you needed a crazy slutty Asian girlfriend and had no trouble finding Brenda Song for that.

Honestly this is just one line in a litany of things I hold against The Social Network and everything it chooses to be and no, TUMBLR, I didn't know about this until the commentary came out and that's why I didn't say anything before now SORRY I HADN'T REALISED THE STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS HAD RUN OUT. Fandom's (and it's not even any one fandom) defensiveness over this type of shit is tiring, tiring. I don't actually care how wonderful Andrew Garfield and Jesse Eisenberg and Trent Reznor and whoever cinematographer are, either. And I don't care that this is being marketed as the Movie Of Our Generation that I'll supposedly show to my kids so they can know that these unlikeable rich white dudes were the ones who shaped their world while everyone else was either missing or in the background. Naked.

Today [livejournal.com profile] rawles made the fantastic point that we need to stop calling these films good. Because they are not in fact good. And the idea that if people would just step back and be ~objective~ and focus on the most "important" things like acting or directing or anything but those subjective annoying social justice issues, they would accept that these films are still good is wrongheaded and insulting.

That doesn't mean that people aren't allowed to love bad things. I love bad things. It's nigh impossible not to love a bad thing and compartmentalize because so many, many things are bad and everyone's threshold for badness is different. The closest thing I have to a primary fandom right now is Merlin, for chrissakes, and people, MERLIN IS BAD. It does a few things that interest me and even make me happy, but that doesn't change the fact that it is a sexist, poorly written, BAD SHOW that I was basically Stockholm'd into by Angel Coulby. But I could make a list as long as my forearm of bad shows that I like.

It is all right to talk about these things. It's not wank to talk about these things. And no fandom, no fandom, is BETTER or safer for NOT talking or even arguing about these things.

UGH I don't know y'all. I'm just mad this morning. I'm going to try to make a post about things that make me happy later, and then I'm going to make things for [community profile] halfamoon because that will make me happy. And idk, idk.

...oh, dear. If multiple posts on my f-list are any indication, there is Gwen wank. So shocked right now you guys, SO SHOCKED.

I'm used to having ships that aren't canon. Most of mine are not. I know how much it sucks and I would never mock that. I know how much this SHOW sucks sometimes, and I know people are angry. Personally Merlin has been making me angry from day one and continues to do so; compartmentalization has been the only way I have ever been able to enjoy it, EVER. At this point I tend to focus on the things about the show that do make me happy, but I get the frustration. I'm a multishipper; the show's been HARD for us in spots. That said, there's some stuff I don't get, stuff that doesn't make sense, stuff that actively annoys me, and that stuff mostly has to do with this assertion that Gwen and A/G have Ruined Everything. And I hope y'all know this isn't directed at everyone.

HERE, HAVE SOME LISTS.

Now, this past episode of Merlin could not have POSSIBLY been less relevant to my interests. No Gwen, no Morgana, maximum Gaius, zzzzzZZZZzzz. That said, I usually review the episodes, and actually I do have some thinky thoughts on Arthur and Merlin and Gaius/Alice, and a few other things. This is not even a rant! *\o/* (LOL, [livejournal.com profile] pathstotread, I found a THERE there after all!)

Like...completely. I can't even get the OS to boot. I go into startup repair and it can't find a system to repair. YAY.

I know! I think I will apply for a CHARITABLE GRANT to replace it.

(lol jk, I'm gonna take it to Geeksquad after I go and get my driver's license renewed. I'm kind of afraid it needs a new hard drive or something.)

Fandom is something though, right?

+ GUYS I FEEL GOOD TODAY. I have today and tomorrow off work, which is awesome. Annnd I have been somewhat productive this weekend! I finished my [personal profile] camelotremix fic (a day late, lalala), and to celebrate, I went over to the Get Arthur and Gwen Laid Campaign at [livejournal.com profile] freemurmurs and wrote some truly filthy A/G porn. *claps in delight* Porn that I may never actually sign my name to, but still! You should all check out that meme if you feel as strongly as I do that Arthur and Gwen should get laid in as many ways as possible.

MY OVERALL POINT IS, I have written more in the last two days than I have in many months! Since the Gwen LAS, I believe. I'm hoping this means my muse is coming back to me and if it is, I might sign up for Yuletide since I have no other holiday exchanges this year (does anyone know when signups are?). I think that would be awesome.

I have much-neglected yardwork to do today and some other things to take care of, but I might write some more pr0ns today too, just to see if yesterday was a fluke or not. :D Apart from that, I have two beta jobs to finish. I'll send them along tonight, ladies. ♥

+ I haven't checked tumblr much at all this weekend which means it'll probably be overwhelming to catch up on at this point, but apparently there is some kind of campaign to woo people back to LJ by not posting on tumblr for a month? I know some of you know what I mean and have been posting about it, and I have some thoughts on it.

When it comes to my f-list, I feel like tumblr is not my problem so much as fandom drift. I've dipped into so many fandoms, mostly abandoned my original fandom, and made friends all over the place, and I don't want to lose any of you that I either talk to now, or have formed connections with through RP and whatever in the past. I still read your posts, and try to comment more, and care about all of you. ♥ You guys put up with my social justice ramblings, my random links, my Merlin posts. You commented when I lost my dog, when my mother was in the hospital last year... whether we still share fandoms or not. I love y'all, and I hope I've been as supportive a presence as you all have been. If you ever feel like we're drifting too far apart we can work on it. ♥
heathershaped: (films: it's nice to be nice)
So real human tragedies, and particularly ones that happen to PoC and in majority-PoC countries, do not make good backdrops for stories about white male heroes and their manpain and their self-discovery and their epic love and their whatever the hell. Ever.

Forever ever? Forever EVER.

It's something that apparently still needs to be said so I am boosting the signal. It is not cool to appropriate PoC tragedies like, say, the recent earthquake in Haiti (what what no seriously what), as a setting for stories about nice white people. It is not okay to co-opt and trivialize the lives and deaths of real people in the pursuit of new and ~exotic settings no matter how good the writing or the intentions may be. That goes for movie producers and professional writers and it also goes for regular folk like us who write porn on the internet.

The second link by [personal profile] amazonziti is an extensive roundup of the debacle currently happening in SPN/J2 fandom.

I also think [personal profile] impertinence's post concerning the author's apology is great, because it's about how being sorry you said something where people who might get offended would see it isn't the same as evaluating the problems with your worldview to begin with.

+ Watched Glee last night and it was such a mess I don't know where to start.

+ I don't know what to say about Doctor Who either - I'm not as in love with this season as I was with the first five episodes, and while I'm still very interested to see what happens with the overarching plot and there are still some very cool moments, my sense of connection with the characters is slipping and the latest episode got on my nerves. Maybe the next Moffat-written episode will cure me?

Speaking of Who, that fandom is the worst. I mean, I already knew that from how they've slagged off on other companions, but the haterade getting dumped on Amy Pond is RIDICULOUS. And for the dumbest reasons. I've got my issues with the season and even when it comes to Amy (whom I still love), but they have nothing to do with her skirt or her job or her sexual assertiveness. What fucking decade are we in, here? Luckily, I don't have to see most of it unless I read over at [livejournal.com profile] doctorwho. (I don't recommend it.)

Anyway, [personal profile] such_heights linked to some posts that I liked:

[livejournal.com profile] calapine writes about the awesome older female characters we've had this season.
[personal profile] jaythenerdkid talks about why Amy isn't a sexist character.

Moffat's made some decisions this season when it comes to gender that have bothered me, but Amy isn't one of them. To say nothing of the irony that is railing against perceived misogyny... by being an actual misogynist. Not that this is at all new, and can every fandom just take a break for like two days or something, I mean damn.

So I've just, against my better judgement, read up on the latest unfunnybusiness in SPN fandom. Not actually having to do with the show, but when I say unfunny I MEAN unfunny. trigger warning.

Some pertinent links on the victim-blaming that's resulted from [livejournal.com profile] thenyxie's banning from this year's WinCon (again, triggery, proceed with caution):

it's not that I'm blaming you, it's just that it's your fault by [livejournal.com profile] impertinence

Fannish spaces, girls, and the culture of silence [livejournal.com profile] bookshop

Oh, and silence is not consent. It's fucking not. And to say that nothing bad must've happened if the police weren't called reveals a hell of a lot of privilege.

And sorry, but if you're resorting to victim-blaming to defend some random on the internet, it's time to examine why you're so invested in preserving the fucked-up system of rape culture we live in.

I haven't posted in a week!

1. So. Merls fandom be wankin'. I've read a few posts and I find myself extremely irritated with every facet of it, both sides really. I had typed up a Post on it and I may yet make it, but at this point who even cares. I'll just be brief: I find the facebook lurkage skeevy, but even if it's not how I'd spend my time I'm in no mood to make anyone feel shitty for looking at the pics. Full disclosure: I looked at them. Furthermore, as upset as everyone is, the stuff we do in fandom (as a group) can seem a bit weird and obsessive to a layperson even on a normal, non-stalky day, and we probably need to recognize that too. Everything will be fine.

For now I think I will not engage further, and just work on the fics I need to write.

I'll be happy when the kids start filming again.

2. Speaking of fandom, round two of Fandom March Madness/SteelCage Match is about to close. I'm absolutely not going to get all spammy about this with banners and things, but for the record I am all up in it and it is exciting.

Good news: My heart's own Lindsay Weir from Freaks and Geeks has beat out Damon Salvatore AND is about to knock out Zack Morris for a place in the Sweet Sixteen. How awesome is it that the nice, ordinary, non-typically-"badass" girl from a show that only ran for a season and no one really even watched is advancing so far?? Answer: PRETTY DAMN AWESOME.

[Here is where I remind myself to make a post I have been wanting to make about the nice girls and the fact that, much as I love girls who can kick some ass, if I ran the world the term 'HBIC' would be stricken from the fannish vernacular. Unless applied to Joan Holloway. Amen.]

Bad news: my bracket's been blown out of the water this round. Considering I put down Juliet Burke, Joannie Holloway, Sydney Bristow (on what astral plane is Chuck a better spy than Sydney Bristow, REALLY), and Eric Northman... things do not look good.

3. The Oscars were pretty great as far as awards shows go. cut for rambling about that )

+ hat tip to [livejournal.com profile] sophinisba for linking to an interesting discussion on canon/fanon woobies. What are they? Are they always dudes, and why is that? It spawned some discussion in Sophie's own entry as well. :D

I'll be the first to admit that manpain (think single crystalline tears) doesn't fascinate me much apart from a few characters (hey there Merlin), but female woobies get me every time, if only because they're so rare. To me it comes down to male bias in most canons, and it's also a question of perception by showrunners and by fans: about when and for whom it's acceptable or even sexy to be vulnerable. The responses in the post are really interesting; there's a variety of ideas about qualifies as a woob and who the woobie characters are across fandoms.

+ [livejournal.com profile] reel_merlin signups! Through the 15th. I'm 1) already freaking out and 2) really excited for some of these! I went ahead and signed up for Y Tu Mamá También, which will end up Gwen/Morgana with some Gwen/Morgause and Morgana/Morgause. I'm struggling with a few things though; I might pester y'all about it at some point.

+ I'm watching Sarah Connor Chronicles. It's reeeeally good. I'm kind of upset it lost out to Dollhouse (which was then promptly canceled anyway).

+ I've been feeling a bit crap over the past week, just kind of fatigued and sniffly. I don't think it's flu but I'm about ready for cold season to be over. I'm SO glad it's March. Eff February, seriously.

+ Back at work today, feeling fine. It's wet and icky outside, though.

+ [livejournal.com profile] zahrawithaz reviews Beauty and the Beast (Merls 2x05). Or rather, the characters of Merlin do. Better than the episode in some ways. *g* I love Merlin to extremes, I seriously do, but this reminds me how many people I know on my own f-list who could write a better show than we actually have.

It's kind of weird/funny that the shows and source material that need the most help are always the ones with the big fandoms. As much as I'd love to be able to roll around in Being Human fic all day for example, I have to admit that it's just a better show, it doesn't need holes filled in with fic and such, so people don't flock to it.

+ Glee fic continues to be better than the actual show. Giving Quinn and Kurt and Sue etc. much better treatment. I do wonder if there's any fic about Tina or Mercedes, though.

+ [livejournal.com profile] randomneses alerted me to this bullshit yesterday: Howard University's Hilltop mag has a staff editorial that details the ways students can prevent getting into dangerous situations at night. Money quote:

As well as making themselves look like easy targets by distractions or lack of awareness, female students are often guilty of another serious offense-strutting through the streets of Washington, D.C. in badly chosen attire (...) If walking through the streets in seductive club attire isn’t a blatant call for sexual harassment, then nothing is.

Do I even need to rant about the ways in which that passage is infuriating? Because yeah, you really want to send a message to college kids of all sexes that girls who dress however the hell they want to are asking for whatever happens to them. Fuck that.

+ That's all for today, must finish coursework for class later, and oh yeah also, am at work. :P
heathershaped: (ravenclaw keira)
+ Yuletide nominations! It's my first year participating, I'm pretty excited. The fandoms I nominated are nothing revolutionary or even particularly obscure as far as obscure fandoms go, BUT:

Jacqueline Carey - The Kushiels Legacy series
Mad Men
RPF - Merlin
Sons of Anarchy
Southland
The Wire

What, ya'll know I had to sneak some Merlin in there. *g* You can nominate here if you're thinking of participating. Any fandom that is tiny, old/inactive, or had its first season/book/premiere date in the past year. Except for Leverage apparently. *sadface*

+ That Merlin character meme was much fun. And my thread - I've been overwhelmingly dubbed Guinevere (yay!), with a dash of Morgana and a smidgen of Merlin to taste. And flowers. Which makes me GLEEFACE. You guys are the best in all the land. ♥♥♥

+ Welcome to new friends! I'm on Twitter too if for some reason you'd want more of my random babble. ;-)

What you can do to help the victims of Typhoon Ondoy/Ketsana (via [livejournal.com profile] lassiterfics):

1. Help for Typhooon Ondoy Victims in the Philippines - This is a good place to keep up with news, with active situation map and a list of ways you can donate. If you scroll down, there is a list of US-based donation drop-off points, though it's just California, New York, and New Jersey. You can also do credit card and PayPal.

2. Ondoy Places to Donate Relief Goods - This GoogleDocs has a more comprehensive list of how to donate under the 'Online/International' category.

3. SPREAD THE WORD.

+ Not like everyone doesn't already know about this, but it bears repeating. Everyone in the entertainment industry (everyone everywhere, really) who is petitioning to free Roman Polanski? Fuck you all.

The longer I look at the list, the more names I recognise, the more ragey I get. Of all the things, of all the people to fight for and to place your well-known names behind. Fuck that.

+ Also, Merlin fandom, don't even start. Just please, don't even. That's all I have to say about that.

Any fandom you know me to be in (I have about four active ones) or that I talk about is fair game, or even if it's a show I post about regularly but am not in the fandom for. Also, these days I SUCK at OTPing, but I should be able to narrow down a favorite for every fandom at least.

+ Today at work we had our normal bi-weekly Friday meeting, even though it's Thursday, because Boss is out tomorrow. Now it feels like Friday. Meh.

+ What part of "if you don't want to read/discuss/participate in meta, then DON'T" do some folks not get? Have peoples' scrollbars stopped functioning, or do they somehow think they should be able to dictate what other people want to talk about as well?

+ Supernatural starts tonight! I can't wait to see what happens. For those of you who love the show but will still be compartmentalizing the race and gender issues, like me, ABW has An Open Letter to Eric Kripke. And seriously, don't read if you're afraid your squee might get harshed or something, idk.

+ The Beatles: Rock Band is out, and OH MY GOD DO WANT. Why am I so broke, f-listies? Whyyyyy?

+ Actually, there's something I'm NOT cranky about today, and that is MERLIN. Guys, I have Merlin on the brain. Is this what TV fandoms are like? Because with HP fandom we only got new canon every couple of years, so the mass fandom flailing was few and far between. But if I'm going to get THIS BOUNCY every time a couple of promo pics or a trailer is released over the next thirteen weeks? I am afraid I might, like, pull something.

+ Though Merlin is on the brain, I happen to be writing epic Potter fic at the moment, which is kind of cool. ([livejournal.com profile] inell is the master of plotbunnies, by the way.)

+ I missed Glee and Leverage because I was politicracking last night. Oh well, I look forward to catching them tonight. :D
